Talking Camping..... Uh Huh... Sure

While at the Sea Ranch campground in Cannon Beach Oregon I was quite amused while watching the people camped next to us. It was a family of three. They came down in their F-250 Lariat luxury truck pulling a very large 5th wheel trailer that couldn't have cost less than $100,000. That was just the beginning. Not only did they have a satelite dish but they also had an LCD TV outside under their awning with three game consoles connected. They also had an outdoor gas "fireplace", a mini refridgerator, and two bug zappers. To top it off they had a carpet laid down. I don't think they ever left the camp and they were watching TV all night long outside. I was just facinated that they would come to such a nice place just to watch TV and apperantly not even see what else was there. I admit that I do have a 26ft Airstream but it is by no means luxury and we did not have it there. It rained the last night we were their and they never came out of their RV the next day until they quickly packed up and left. They might as well have stayed at home.

Maybe Jay Leno takes on deeper spiritual meaning when he is watched from the bosom of nature....

I just can't help but think they are cheating their kids out of some of the best experiences they might have in life.

i dont care much for the bug zappers or the fireplace since they're making an effort but the LCD TV is going over the edge. I would probably bring a cd player or a radio to something like that so i could listen to some music

I agree. When I go camping, it's sleeping bag, tent, campfire and flashlight.

Where's the fun in "camping out" with an RV?

[edit]: and marshmallows! Can't forget the marshmallows

I agree. I love tent camping and the last thing I need is a TV. It is fun to use the old Airstream though. We use it mostly in the winter when it's cold. About the gas outdoor fireplace, they had it sitting next to the fire pit that came with the campsite. I guess the prospect of burning wood was too much.

And I thought I was "cheating" when I replaced my sleeping bag with an air matress.

Camping next to an electrical outlet and public bathrooms is cheating.

LOL well that is the only place to camp anywhere around. There are plenty of hotels and resorts. The campground is really nice though and I'm glad it's there.

My only camping experience was outside of Kodiak, reachable by those water-plane things(late )... got weathered in for 3 days or so, bears through the camp site, fish for our supper, taking the gun away from the tent of the guy who had to many beers... good times

The only thing I do now if I go camping is use an air mattress to softing the ground for I can't stant sleeeping on hard ground.

Having a TV defeats the purpose of camping the only thing I might have is a radio to listen to a baseball game.

I "camped out" in the jungles for the better part of 13 months once. Slept on the ground and the gas mask made a nice pillow. In later years I spent week-ends at the lake camping on the ground. Nothing like chow cooked on a campfire. However there was a time I woke up one morning and a cottonmouth had decided to become my bed partner. Why I wasn't bitten when we both scared each other escapes me but I used a small tent with zippers afterwards.

The lack of the experience never hurt me. Can't say as I would love to go camping!

But, to each their own. I do think if you're going to do it, do it right!

If you hike less than 15 miles with a pack lighter than 120lbs, it's not what I call camping! I think it's sad that people are that attched to technology and comforts. Did they even cook? Well, I shouldn't make fun, maybe they like the change of scenery. At least they did it as a family.

Talking

Well heres the other side of the story.
My wife and i use a 30ft motorhome.
When its over 100 i run the air conditioning
and when its cold we run the heater. When the weathers good
I cook outside. When its bad we cook inside. We may read or just
sit inside and talk, but we have a good time and thats
what we go for.

Yeah, I'm not bashing RV'ers. Heck, I am one. I too use the heater when it's cold (no A/C though ). I like it both ways. Those people were just too much.

I thought when I moved up on camping in open air to a tent I was cheating, and again one I upgraded to two tents, and a minibus. But a TV!?! When I go camping it is to get away from things like that and to give me some quiet for a week or two. I understand staying in a campervan or something, but when you don't do any 'camping' activities, jsut sit there?

Snakes most certainly have teeth. All snakes use these teeth in a back and forth motion to move their prey down their throats. Venemous reptiles have fangs which are longer than their other teeth and hollow to facilitate the injection of venom. Some, like Coral snakes, have these longer fangs at the back of their mouth not the front.

I have had a couple of nasty bites that bled profusely from non-venemous snakes.
