Needed: Someone Proficient in Math
I was wondering if someone attending college or a college graduate could give me some math help via AIM, sort of like tutoring. I can't really pay you, so I'm just asking as a enormous favor. I need help with algebra II - I just can't understand it on my own. If anyone is willing to help, please send me a PM. Thanks a lot.

Are you in high school or college?
If it's a high school course there are plenty of people in high school who could help you just as well, or better than a college student, because they have taken the course more recently. Many schools (both high school and college) offer programs to help students such as yourself receive tutoring, have you looked into that yet? How about some students in your class, there has to be a few who actually understand the material. It's a lot easier to receive math help in person than over AIM because of all the writing and diagrams that take a while to be expressed over a chat interface. |

mattg is right i doubt you'll be able to get effective help from someone over aim. it's one of those things you really need to be face to face with someone.

Have you asked your teacher? Mine have always said they are willing to help anyone with a need. Also we have lunchtime and afterschool math tutorials where you can go and do hw and get help from them when you get stuck. If neither of those could work, then I would just look around for someone you know or in school that might be willing too for really cheap or free... maybe they could use it on a resume/college app?

That is asking a lot for free tutoring. I agree with the suggestion that you ask around in your school about possible help. The resources are greater in college, but you are actually paying for tutoring with your tuition. High School has less resources, so you might have to dish out some cash. I believe you are in high school if I remember correctly. Ask your parents if they could get you a tutor for an hour or two a week. Tutoring usually runs between $10-$20 an hour depending on the experience.
If they say no to paying for tutoring, here is a sure way they will pay for it. Ask if they could help you with your homework. They probably don't know the material themselves or will get extremely frustruated helping you. They will then go out and get you a tutor so they don't have to deal with doing math themselves.

depending on the HS, tutoring may even be a free service to you. at my HS, they trained students already proficient in the subject how to tutor, and then the school took care of paying them. that way, you are not paying, and you also know the people that are tutoring you know the material. its worth looking into

I was wonderng if you'd checked these guys out : http://math.about.com/od/tutors/
Since you need the help to be on-line they seemed worth a look. |

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. The thing is, I'm out of high-school right now, and I'm just waiting on the next semester to go to community college. I want to do some self-study in my free time with a few textbooks I have. I didn't really mean "free tutoring", just someone who knows their stuff that I could tap for some assistance if I didn't understand a concept. Nothing that would take more than a few minutes of your time.

I have some software that helps with that!
It is a package called "Math Advantage 2000" It is actually pretty good. It has Pre Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, etc. This software is 2 years old or more so you might find some used software like this. Since math doesnt change much, the tutor programs like this are just as valid as when they were created. Last edited by piasabird; 09-09-2004 at 11:04 PM. |
