It's time for me to complain

Okay, I live in the LA area in California. Specifically in the area just east of LA. I don't have air conditioning. I have two computers in my room, and my room faces southwest, which means it gets the sun for the ENTIRE day. Do you have any idea how HOT it is in here??? I mean, when it's 105F outside, and the air doesn't move, it can get horrible! Why can't they make computers that make COLD air instead of hot air?!?!? Seriously, before I consider starting a new build, I should think about getting air conditioning. Ah, winter will come soon, which means it'll be in the low 70F's instead of the low 100F's.

You could buy a window A/C unit from Wal-Mart for around $100. I think it would be worth it.

That's why I like it here. It's a mild climate all year around. Yes, it's HOT in the summer and it rains quite a bit in the winter but I really don't mind. I like rain and hot sunny weather. I'm glad it only snows once or twice a year here.

Yeah, southern California is nice because I just have to worry about earthquakes, fires and mudslides. I don't think I could deal with this "snow" stuff I hear about.

"You could buy a window A/C unit from Wal-Mart for around $100. I think it would be worth it"

Unfortunately, the way my windows are I couldn't have an inwindow unit. I asked the guy at Sears if I could just park it under my desk and turn it on, and he laughed, saying I'd die in a few hours. I'm almost willing to try it!

Hehehe... umm... we get a PFD(permanent fund dividend) every year from oil money I think it is, but I the check is less this year then last... something like 1,400 bucks last year per person I think... But it also costs more to live up here apperently in comparison to some places... Well I don't care, I'm still in highschool so it's all good

You can't put the AC under your desk because it'll just make your room that much hotter.

There's got to be a way you can get a wall mount AC in your room by modifying whatever makes it so that you can't right now.

My room is the furthest from our house's AC and on the sunny side, so it gets pretty warm too. Something I do to cool down is take a couple of ice packs from the freezer and put them in my pockets, or take a few two liter bottles of water that were frozen and place them in front of a fan pointed at me.

there arent too many tornadoes in SE michigan where i live. we do get a few, but nothing that causes any major damage. the worst things we get as far as weather are just wicked snow storms.

No doubt. As a former MI resident, I can say for sure that Michigan has one of the coldest Winters wherever I've lived, and I've spent winter in several places.

A Mini-split heat pump may be the answer for you. You can Google the phrase mini-split heat pump for a random sampling. Here is a link for a system similar to what I installed in my wife's room last week.
http://www.mrslim.com/products/Categ...ctCategoryID=7
Here is another, to show that I have no preference for a manufacturer:
http://www.atrendyhome.com/hitminsplita.html
I will post pics online. Ask, and I'll send you (or other readers) a link.
This unit, and a small window unit, kept the house cool using only my 5 KW generator last week.
There are also portable air conditioners, but I have only a few minutes familiarity with them. Google "portable air conditioners".
If you can build computers, you can install a mini-split system.

That's it???? -20'F WITH the windchill? Heck... I'm not even plugging my car in at that temp yet.... I start plugging in at about -20'F BEFORE the windchill and only if parked outside... if it's in the garage... I'll wait till -35'F and colder.

Coldest day I remember was something like -55'C, -82'C with the wind... that converts to -67'F / -116'F and I was working an 8 hour shift outside.

Below 0??? Geez, I don't even know what it's like below freezing! I'll put a sweatshirt on when it's about 55F out at night. I love being able to wear shorts in the dead of winter. I just wish we got more rain out here.

HAL9000- What do you mean by plugging your car in???

Are you serious? ... a block heater on the car.. you plug it in and it heats up an element to warm the coolant in your car making for easier starting in cold weather.... and a sweater at 55'F? I don't put on a anything heavier than a T-shirt until about 35'F

Wow. You know, the funniest thing to me is how I can't even fathom temperatures that low, or having to plug your car in to heat it up. My mom is moving to Fargo, North Dakota in February, and I'll be flying out to visit her. I think I'm going to have to buy a whole new wardrobe just for that weather!!!

You need to get around more. Experience some different climates. The lowest termperature I have experienced here is about 9 F. That was cold and I can't imagine 0 or below.

Oh come on Nuke.. this was a COLD summer that we had... the average temp for June, July, August was only 15'C (59'F)... the last time we had a summer like that was recorded in 1902 where the average temp for the three months was only 14.5'C (58'F)... you got off lucky if you don't like heat.

cold winter

Hey Hal , don't know if you are old enough to remember the late 70's- but I can remember temps of -100 degress f with the wind chill here in northern Ohio in that time frame . Got me to thinking, if it was that cold here in Ohio- just how freakin cold did it get up your way???? I also remember the blizzard of 78 (was called a white hurricane) with one of the lowest pressures ever recorded over land at that time. Storm passed directly over cleveland and totally shut down the state for three days. Got lots of stories from that one.

Yer forgetting about the grasshoppers, HAL. Another reason I love winter: it kills all the pests. Well, not all, but most of them.

Even the hoppers are nothing this year Nuke... hardly any.

Mark70... ya.. I remember the late 70's... twas cold.. early 80's wasn't much better.. late 80's started getting milder...

This past winter wasn't bad at all... we had some cold days, but they only lasted a day or two and it warmed up again... usually we get a stretch early in the year where there is a good 4-6 weeks of bitterly cold weather.

Well here in South Texas we have pretty hot summers and (relatively) mild winters. if I was one of you guys up north I would be hanging the paint/hairspray can out the window hoping for some ozone depletion/global warming.......lol. I have done some camping in various parts of the states and in some pretty cold weather (-20-30) and I can say I had alot of fun, however the phrase "nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there" comes to mind.

-Spartan

edit: moose- I would find a way to make that window A/C work.....105?!?!!? I coouldn't take that!

Whats really fun to do on really cold weather (-40'C/F).. bring a pot of water to a boil.. carry it outside and toss the water into the air... it makes a loud snap and vaporizes instantly.

That sounds just too funny. I almost want to visit someplace extremely cold just to try that out.
