Webcams and MSN
I'm considering getting a web-cam for use with MSN Messenger.
![]() From what I've seen, it appears web-cams have a bit of lag when used with MSN, is this more likely from a bad cam or bad connection? Another question I have, if I get a cam that has a microphone but I only want the other person to recive video, can this be easily done in MSN? Granted haveing a cam with audio isn't bad, but it'd be nice to be able to only have video (don't ask me why, I don't really know). Any suggestion for a good cam from newegg? Right now I'm looking at one of the ~$20 D-link cams. TIA, L J

I have never had a webcam but I do know that they lag. It doesn't matter what you're doing with it. I use MSN Messenger a lot and I have looked into the settings. I think there is a way to mute the microphone.

Video and audio are separate channels or connections so to speak. When either party requests or sends an invitation for video conference, only the video part is used. Audio must be requested separately. You can use either or both. You are not forced to use both at the same time.
About the lag, this is not just MSN. Any video stream always carry some lag. The slower your connection, the longer the lag. Audio also has a lag. Megabit connections won't see much lag at all. It is not a bad connection or camera, just the nature of the beast. Compressing, transmitting and decompressing images take time.
