What's going on?

Anyone else notice that sometimes in the threads that certain words are green with two underlines and linked to other websites? What is that?

Another way for a web site to make money from sponsors. Well as long as pcmech stays in business I will put up with it for now. But if this turns into anandtech.com I am running away

They are sponsored links. They've been on the main website for quite awhile, but I decided to try them out here in the forums, too.

Yep, I see 'em. I was just about to ask the same question. I thought that they could be ads of some sort that worked their way into the site. I got a screen shot of them, but seeing as the mods know about them, I think we are ok.

Yeah, I'm on IE now cause I'm at work. I was on FireFox this morning while I was at home and I didn't see the links.

Thanks for the explanation drisley.

I understand the need to bring in revenue for the site but it causes my browser (Maxthon) to pause for a couple seconds and it is quite annoying. I tried it in FireFox and Mozilla and it does the same thing.

Firefox handles it fine - I see long pauses and otherwise tedious ads in MSIE6SP1.

Well it does it on my FireFox. I don't know what's going on. It must be something on my system.

They show up on AOL also.

Curse AOL, can't wait till I get home and can use Firefox.

Seems like a non-issue, just don't click on the green words. Picking the brains of the members is why I come here, and the occasional chuckle.

You don't have to click on them. It causes a 2+ second pause every time a page loads. For example, I click on a thread and start scrolling down. It freezes for two or more seconds before it goes to the bottom of the page. It's aggrivating.

It's also an onmouseover thing - it freezes or rather crashes the browser when it loads up the description. I'm on MSIE right now, and it's lagging crazy...guess I gotta get used to Firefox.

Also, Hi Ho, congrats on #4000

I haven't seen these links yet so I pulled up IE and started looking through a couple of threads and sure enough, green links.
They haven't been showing up in Netscape.

That's what Firefox is for.

Also, I've been noticing a few pop ups here and there too...I'm wondering how, since I have the googletoolbar and MSIE from WinXP Pro SP2...which has a "built in pop up blocker". Wierd...partly at awe how it can get through my blockers, not necessarily annoyed.
