Google strikes again: google maps

Quote:
Google Maps went live today sporting some pretty impressive features (would you expect anything less from Google?). Hit the link and check it out. Maybe I am just burned out on MapQuest and the others but I think Google Maps beats anything currently out there. Give it a spin and let me know what you think.

Google decided to make dynamic, interactive maps that are draggable, no clicking and waiting for graphics to reload each time you want to view the adjacent parts of a map. Want to be able to type in the name of a region or neighborhood and see any part of it as easily as with a regular street map? Now you can with Google Maps.
~From HardOCP

Looks very cool and very easy to use. Two thumbs up

I'm not convinced that it is really anthing brilliant, yet, although I am sure google will improve it. Problems I have had:
-Seems slower than alternates (www.map24.com is the one that comes to mind)
-US only
-Directions not as comprehensive as others
-Directions not as amusing as others (my favourite being "Your are now leaving place x" when I am pretty sure you are not.)
-Only one country, although I think this will change

Although I like how it finds multiple places, and it is very fast, as I expect from google. The only thing that is slow is the loading when you zoom in.

Dude, that rocks. I got tired of Mapquest always getting me lost and not being able to read the actual map. I really like the lay out and how easy it is to read it.

Yup - with a search function down to individual igloos and travel times adjustable for how many dogs are in your sled team.

And of course, one would have to tell the time to the nearest U.S border too.

Personally, I don't like it that much, and I don't see how it "blows Mapquest out of the water". The only real improvements are the maps. That is really nice. But otherwise, I think Mapquest has the edge. I mean for instance...its SOO much easier to type in the address, then it is with Google Maps. And the site is far better designed then Google's as well. For instance :

Googles :

Head northwest from Haddale Ave - go 0.0 mi

Mapquest :

Start out going SOUTHWEST on WASHINGTON AVE toward W WASHINGTON AVE.

And I don't see how anyone got lost on Mapquests directions...my family never has. The only thing that I really like is the bigger map. But those little miniture maps are silly. For instance, if you take a long, crosscountry trip, what are you going to do? Print out 30 or 40 little individual maps?

I don't see a need to print out Mapquest's maps... the directions work just fine.

Edmontons on the main map. Apparently the city consists of nothing but red Xs is square boxes. I bet google is currently working on expanding to Canada. Maybe Regina will make it.

First of all it's still Beta, second, anyone who ever used mapquest hasn't explored other options. Why does everyone use mapquest when directions and maps are much better at maps.yahoo.com ?

Think of it...www.mapquest.com...the average person, its much easier to remember that then "maps.yahoo.com"

I've seen a number of times where mapquest and yahoo maps didn't update their directions. New roads being put in and all that messes up "okay, now take the first right...now take the 4th left...etc"

Well directions on any map site that I have been to have left something to be desired. I use yahoo to find the location (I've used others and they actually give me the wrong location) and make my own directions to a place.

one thing I must agree with is the fact that they seam to forget that the internet is world wide, and they only have maps for the U.S.
some how that does not seam fair.
