Is the human life span about to increase several hundred years? Is medical science on the edge of this break though. One would think that when reading about prison sentences that are handed down by a judges.
A person sentenced 640 years, which according to CNN "effectively jailing him for the rest of his life." Why not just a sentence for life and no parole? Maybe after he is dead they are going to let me rot in the cell for the remainder of his sentence. I know they have legal reason for such, as in adding up all the possible time a person could get for multiple crimes and such, but to me that is just a dumb sentence. Same as 3 life sentences we see in other cases. A person only has one life to live in prison. I think it is time, our courts get a reality check. CNN needs a reality check on that quote as well, I would have to say that anyone reading a 640 sentence would be able to put that together in their mind it should jail the person for life. http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe...ine/index.html

Well, you are talking about prison years. Here are some comparisons:
Human Year - 1 Dog Year - 7 Prison Year - 50 So as you can see 640yrs. in prison years is only about 13 in human terms.

Parole boards are required to evaluate reductions in sentences. And can reduce sentences. But in general they can only reduce sentences one step at a time.
So the courts, in order to keep someone in jail, give multiple sentences. Somebody with a 10 year maximum sentence, for instance, could get paroled at any time after a minimum time. But give them 9 years, 1 month, and 1 day and it will take 3 parole board actions to free them after the wait for the minimum time. Doesn't neccessarily hold at all levels, but it was explained that way to me by a judge. |

Well, the guy is going to be let out in 30 years anyway, so it doesn't really matter whether they condemn him to 10,000 years or more.

I lost all respect for CNN years ago with their more than obvious political agenda.

Getting serious again, you see those sentences that look ridiculous because of how the sentencing statutes are set up in different jurisdictions. There's determinate, indeterminate (friendly to probation & parole), presumptive, etc etc sentencing schemes. In many states a life sentence is 13-30 years. Some jurisdictions don't allow a sentence of "life with no parole" so the judges stack consecutive (as opposed to concurrent) sentences on them. Sometimes the judges sentence the way they do to make a point. It all lies in how the statutes in any particular jurisdiction are written. In the federal court system, they say "life," you're doing "life." No 85% of 30 year laws or anything like that. No parole in the fed system anymore.
