My brother got a new Gateway 933mz and then ties it down with the first year free AOHell. What good is pay or free with all the disconnects and AOHell taking over your pc?

it's a non-issue IMHO. the people that use AOL will either smarten up and get another ISP or just sit there and keep getting ripped-off. Either way, I don't care what they do.

Well, tehy've been getting ripped for the past four-five years, so I think the trend will continue. I keep seeing that they have more and more subscribers and wonder just how stupid are those people or are they really finding something in the actual AOL content that is worth the $$$$.

Well Im using AOHELL now and HATE IT!!! Theres so many quirks in the software that just bug me to the extreame and then theres the whole fact that it kicks you all the time and you need it constantly on and running just to be connected to the internet. It came 4 a year free with this gateway here and I couldnt get it removed from the package so I know Im paying for it in the price of the comp but I wouldnt want this service even if they paid me 10$ a month if thats all I could use. Only 3 more months till DSL reaches my house though

I think, some will leave AOHell, and AOHell end-up making same amount of $$$ with existing boneheads.

I dunno I think alotta peeps keep paying 4 it cause they dont want to deal with the years of constant junkmail calls etc. general harrasment AOHELL gives yah when you try to quit.

I remember using a program called AOHell back in '94 to get free AOL. Back then AOL was the only online option for a highschool kid like me and I took full advantage. Ha, I remember tricking a 12year old kid into giving me kis passwork and prob. rose his AOL bill by about $500. Not that I'm proud of my youthful exploits or anything. Does this program still exist?

Well, maybe indirectly. If it weren't for all of the customers we had ON AOL then there'd be no need for us in tech support other than for software issues, but our software is pretty simple and pretty difficult to screw up. There'd definitely be less of us if there were no AOL and Compuserve.

AOL always seems to have more customers, no matter how bad it gets. I sometimes wonder if their 'reported customers' amount is actually true. I think if there were 21 million A-hole-hellers online at one time the internet would stop dead!

Ill admit to using AOL years ago when I first started to use the WWW. It didnt take long to figure that AOL was slowly sucking the life out of my machine and internet expirience with their limited content and constant boot offs after 3.0. Many people stay with AOL however because they dont have a clue to what they are missing by staying. These people are perfectly content checking their email and chat room bouncing and will keep AOL profitable for many years.

A point that's being missed here is that we take a lot of knowledge for granted.

How many of us have asked these questions and received these answers from newbie computer users:

Q: Who is your internet provider?:
A: Netscape (or Internet Explorer, take your pick).


Q: What browser are you using?:
A: Yahoo.

AOL caters to these newbie users, most of whom can barely use a computer.

I know one AOL user who types all papers into her email program. When I asked her why (she has MS Word), her response: "I don't know how to save"


Since her email program automatically saves her paper on exit, there's no motivation to "learn how to save".

Inertia is a great non-motivator. The saying that, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here. I know a couple of people who use aol, and tho far from newbies, they see no reason to change because it works for them.

Very few people have not used aol, even I have used it. When I went to quit (for the second time), I researched their site and found a mailing address to write to to quit. I wrote to them explaining that if I talked to them on the phone, they'd just offer me another free month, and I really, really wanted to get quit of them.
