What are your three favorite movies?

I have a Netflix subscription and have rented at least a hundred movies over the past few years. In looking for movies to rent that I have never seen I thought some of you might have some ideas for excellent movies and why they are excellent?

Last night I saw Disclosure which is a thriller about...computers and technology. Made in 1994 it mentioned 100 millisecond hard drive access times. Which to me seems kinda slow. This makes me curious though. What are the lowest hard drive access times now? By the way, it was an excellent movie but you cant watch it in front of the kids (sex scene). The plot is complex with a few twists.

My favorite movies of all time are:
-Das Boot (in German with English subtitles)... the dubbed version stinks because the emotions of the German actors carry over much better than the dubbed US voice actors who seem to have gone without their coffee that morning.

-2001 a Space Oddysey....You have to read the book to understand it.

-Top Gun...The flying scenes are still intense but I can do without the non-flying scenes. Its a great movie with 5.1 surround sound cranked up, a good subwoofer and nobody else in the house who is going to yell at you to turn the volume down. Fast forward through the love scenes and the volleyball scene (you know who they did the volleyball scene for).

About 10-11ms. About 10 times better then back in the day.

nocturnx , going by his list he probably has never seen a Disney film.

As for Hal, no kidding on 2001. Which I actually feel I understand that movie as well. For those of you that have seen it and need to know more with out reading the book, check out the movie 2010. It does explain why Hal did malfunctioned. Actually he didn't.

So far, top gun and 2001 seem to be on the top of the list.

Gimpy, 1. The Shawshank Redemption, really good film.

I wouldn't say these are my 3 "favorite" movies, but I do like them alot:

The Professional

Pulp Fiction

L.A. Confidential

Been watching a lot of Asian cinema lately and found the ones mentioned in my previous post to be very interesting and different from typical Hollywood fare. But looking at my DVD collection...yes, I do tend to gravitate towards violent movies.

I feel the same way about Days of Thunder, not a real good story, but a good loud movie nonetheless.

Totally agree with you on this one. No matter how many times I see the Star Wars films, it seems like there is always a line or an action shot that I never caught before. And the Star Trek movies keep getting better with each one. It's like the actors are so familar with each other that they have a certain chemistry that you just can't get anywhere else.

Even if you're not a Star Trek fan I reccomend First Contact. Great movie.

Other favorites: I, Robot; Apollo 13; and the ever popular Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail. Runaway, runaway!!!!

cricket,

if you get IFC on your cable system, they have an excellent documentary on the development of action movies in Hong Kong Cinema (quasi-insultingly titled Chop-Socky: Cinema Hong Kong). Good hour or so and a quick overview of how HK action films have changed over time (themes, levels of violence, story source material etc)

As to my favorite 3 movies...it is tough to limit the list to just 3, but here goes:

The Godfather (I & II, III was horrible except for the conclusion scenes)
Leon (also known as The Professional...This was Natalie Portman's 1st major role in film)
Metropolis (a whole new way of looking at the future0.

Tough to pick three, but here goes

Braveheart
The Game
Gattaca

@mbossman2

Metropolis was a really interesting flick. The version I saw was a black and white silent film with subtitles. Kind of cartoonie by today's standards, but the make-up does really help show the emotions the actors are trying to portray.

Don't think I can pick FAVORITES, but these are some that I really enjoy. I'll probably think of 30 more once I've posted this.

• Shawshank Redemption (or pretty much anything with Morgan Freeman)
• The Incredibles
• The Abyss

I'll also give honorable mention to:
• Labyrinth
• The Great Outdoors

Question for bigandy and Radioactiveninja: What was it about Boondock Saints that makes this particular movie a favorite of yours? I've seen it and didn't think much of it...in fact, seeing Willem Dafoe play a gay FBI agent was down right disturbing.
