Hello all! Some of you may be aware, but maybe many of you are not, that PCMech members have come together to form a Folding@Home Team. The purpose of this team is to download and run a simple program in the background. This program (from Stanford University) runs a simulation, and the results are used to study causes, and hopefully cures, for such diseases as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS, and others.
Our team has consistently donated Work Units and points for the past year. We rank #63 out of the thousands of teams working toward a cure in this project. Take a peek HERE to view the hundreds of PCM members either currently Folding or who have contributed in the past. To learn more, every bit of info you could need can be found by clicking the link in my signature, or by browsing through the other threads in the Distributed Computing Forum. We have the numbers and resources here at PCMech to really make a difference. Hope to see you join up or re-join soon!

C'mon folks, we know you're out there and we know you have Hyperthreaded P4s and Athlon 64s just waiting to fold. Show us what you've got and get some work units cooking!
![]() Tell you what... The next THREE PEOPLE I see (indicated on the page linked in Kov-Ice's message above) who finish their FIRST EVER work units as new team members can request their own customized signature image like you see floating around (as in Kov-Ice and my sigs). The only stipulation is that it follows forum rules and only the top-left image is customized, but other than that, I'll toss whatever logo, character, or other image you like. If I miss you, feel free to let me know you've finished your first work unit. I don't want you to miss out just because I'm not watching. LET'S GET MOVING FOLKS!

We are in the #63 position but have a number of teams moving up on us within the next 60-180 days at our current production. I would really love to see us get inside the top 60 teams or even in the top 50 teams.
Where are all those killer AMD rigs I see in so many sigs?!?!?!

Please folks, put whatever computer power you can towards this project. Sure the competition makes it fun and pushes us to get more folders and try to pump out more WUs, but this project is about research, and research which can hopefully save lives from some very common and very debilitating (even terminal) illnesses.
If you are interested, please check out the DC forum, and make a point to check out Kov-Ice's "Info To Know" thread (click on the image in his or my sigs) for some really helpful information, and so that you don't have to wade through the 46 pages of the original F@H thread. yeah, come on guys... its not hard, 3min of work and your done, never have to even look at the screen again if you don't want to! its just there in the background doin its thing. i actually think it takes more time to uninstall the thing than it does to set it up. so start folding for pcmech and keep folding!
![]() also, summer is here, today is the last day for underclassmen so.... my points are really gonna drop, we need some new folders to help take my place! anyone up to the challenge?

I can't connect to it through my server, the university has it blocked. I can't download work units. I will start once I leave here at the end of the year though

I wonder why a university would have it blocked... Have you contacted your IT dept to see if they'd consider allowing it. You could show them it's the research of a fellow university. Worth a shot...

Foldin' For PCMech!

how would they block it? unless they blocked the server IPs and the port numbers but if they went through all the trouble to do that then they must really not like the project!
but yes, i would atleast ask them about it. if your lucky you might even get them to let you install it on a lab or 2! |

They don't like this kind of thing, because they see it as a permanent drain on resources, just like the don't like us listening to streaming audio off the internet.

The size of files being transferred is relatively small. Even having an entire lab wouldn't strain most broadband connections.
Everyone, we'd sure like to see you join this project. It's nearly hands-free, and it's for a great cause. |

Our active membership total is still hanging around 67, although our production output has increased quite a bit over the past few weeks. I would be great to see more active members joining in. Stryker, has anyone claimed that last signature?

I was up playing doom 3 with it on my DC processor last night and didnt have any problems. I probably wont get very fast timings on the frames though because im almost always doing something else on the computer or its shutdown because it creates too much heat. when my dual core is overclocked to 2.8ghz and ive got a thermaltake tsunami just blowing the hot right out the back.. it gets really hot in here lol.

The good thing about F@H is that it's supposed to use only spare cpu cycles. It's priority is set lower than your other apps, so it basically pauses the calculations it's running when you're doing something else. The OpenGL conflict just arises sometimes when you have the F@H graphic window up while doing some other graphics-intensive program. Like I said above, tho, if you're running the little text box console, then no worries!

Yeah its completely effortless... it comes on when you boot up and stuff. I never have to worry about it. I'm just curious... what is this for? Its making what seems to be very complex frames since they take so long but im wondering why we need these?

Alright, I'm on board too. I just have one question... will it really take 104 days to complete one work unit?? I installed this once but then uninstalled it because of exaggerated time estimates like that. But this time it's installed and running for good.

Welcome Stuey
No it should not take that long, the estimations are usually wrong, especially when it has just started a new WU. Most WU's take 6-48 hours for me. namakan |

Thanks for the info!
EDIT: I don't know if I can keep this running. I left the room and after an hour my CPU jumped to 67°C. Usually my temps are 49 or so but in an unairconditioned room they're 52 or so. But yea... this kinda worries me. Maybe I should turn CPU usage down to like 40% or so? Right now it's at 100% which is probably what's causing such high temps. (Note, even after running most games my temp is less than 60). Last edited by Stuey; 07-01-2005 at 09:40 PM. |

mountainking (and any other interested parties, of course), if you click on the "Click Here to Save Lives" signature images near the top of the thread, you'll be able to find more detailed info on the importance of this project.
Stuey, that seems like an awfully big jump, especially for a Northwood core (assuming you're folding with the comp in your sig). My P4 2.4C is OC'd 20% and still never runs above 55C. My Prescott 3.0 only hits 57C at full load. Both are HyperThreading, so I'm actually running two instances of F@H on each. What's your cooling setup? Have you tried a different temp monitor to double check? |

I posted a thread asking for suggestions as to how to better cool my system since I didn't want to hijack this one.
In the meantime, I have a few tricks up my sleeve as to how to better cool the CPU. I do believe though that my mobo monitor is overreacting. |
