Pack a knife on a plane?

I was wondering what the rules were for bringing a knife on a airplane, not carry-on obviously, but to pack it and take it with you in your other luggage.
Do you need to get permission ahead of time, or can you just bring it and they wont care?

I think you only need to notify them of so-called "hazardous materials". I have packed my razor in my checked bag before and nothing came of it.

Thats a very handy site, thank you.

One question, how would you get the items that can't be brought in carry-on or checked, over seas?

such as?

a lot of the stuff that you can't put on an airplane (things that go boom, or shoot) aren't really legal overseas anyways....

For example, the flammable stuff? Like a lighter.

Not really.... it'd be easy to hide banned things in those transformers.

The last I heard was that lighters were contriban and would be confiscated, and destroyed. You wouldn't get it back. There is the very real possibility that it could be used to set off an explosive device.

setting off a bomb is certainly 1 issue, but so is the fact that a full butane lighter, at altitude, is under a lot more pressure than at sea level (even more so in the upressurized cargo area) and is a explosion and fire risk...besides, you can't smoke on planes anymore so why do you need a lighter?

Agreed, my comment more had to do with the fact that it was specifically listed. One of those things that makes ya wonder WHO caused it to be. Like so many consumer warnings, nodoz pills I remember have a warning "not to be used as a substitute for sleep." Ya just know, somewhere, sometime, someone tried somethin pretty stupid for that warning to be on the box.

Yup, for sure... although this may be a dubious thing to talk about, I know a girl who used the pill, and she never took the placebos. She didn't realise this could cause osteoporosis later in life. And there isn't a warning on the side, so I wonder how long before someone sues and that's added to the box

new heating pads don't even get ot because people are stupid (probably all teens, funny thing is I'm a teen where is my crazyness?) and many other things have been dulled down a bit or have 2 million warnings in the manual. nintendo gamecube for example says in the manual and with every game that the laser can cause you to go blind if you stare directly at it.

I think that instead of destroying them they should give the confiscated lighters to the people who are LEAVING the airport that had theirs confiscated.

Recycling is in...
