Do You Like Your Job?

I was just reading HAL's post about his new job and how he is enjoying it and thinking about Sarge's quest for a new job and was wondering how well (or not) do the people in here like or dislike their jobs? If you like your job..how so? If your a student, what kind of job would you like to have after graduation? If your looking for a job..same question. If your job stinks..then why? If your retired...how are you enjoying retirement?

On a scale of 1-10, how do you rate your job?

To start, I enjoy my job skippering a small research boat around the SF Bay. I enjoy working with the scientists and grad students. I appreciate the variety of the work. I sometimes wish the hours were more consistent but this beats being forced to work at a desk 9-5, Mon-Fri or being at sea for weeks or months. I rate my job an 8.

I do. Compared to school, working is a joke. Usually i work 8.5 hour days (i work at staples)...doesnt seem like a real job or anything but i havent graduated high school yet. I do work alot weekly tho, at least 30 hrs. or so. Sometimes i work every day in a given week, other times only 3 days or something of the sort. It doesnt bother me at all. its a relief when i can work, then just come home and stil have time to hang out either at night, or before work the next day. during the school year everything is non stop. wake up at 6 30, bus at 7 15, school 8:30-3:30, bus ride home, back at 4:15...homework, dinner, then homework again....till about 12 or 1 am. School is repetetive, and as you can imagine i dont feel so great when i sleep less than 7 hrs. a day. at least at work, stuff changes, and if the store isnt busy i can talk to some of my friends that work there, alot of cool ppl there.

its also cool to have my own income and enough money to buy stuff and to save.

Just finished my 5th day at my first job... I give it a 6. I have to input Data into a spreadsheet from thousands of documents. What fun, eh? It's a job though, and it's nice to keep busy and not waste away my summer. Feels like I am doing so much more in these past 5 days.

Someone once asked me what I like about my job. I told them 'the people'. They then asked what I didn't like about it and my response was also 'the people'.

My job ranges from a 5 to a 10 depending on the day and 'the people'.

I totally love my job. On a scale of 1-10... I go 10 at the moment. The people, whether they are the cafeteria staff, or the big shots on the top floor are all awesome... great benefits, great working atmosphere, decent hours and decent pay.

Well, lets go through my jobs:

1) PCMech Writer - 10
This allows me freedom of working when I want on a given week, most projects take from 1-3 hours to complete, depending on the topic. Pay is good, Dave and Bryan is/was (respectively) great to work with. Couldn't get much better than this.

2) Mowing - 5
Pay is great, working in the 100' heat sucks more than a... nevermind.

I'm looking into a few oportunities, and hopefully I can average a 7 on them. I'm hoping to drop the mowing next year, and I think one of my oportunities will give me enough income to do so.

I work as a IT person in a small compay and I would rate my job a nine, and I find it very interesting and educational. I just wish I didn't have to go school, then I could work a lot more (although there are limits on how much I can work at my age).

I like that I have something new and different to do every week or holiday to keep me interested and learning, first it was repairing machines, then setting up software and another time a server and so I never have to do anything really repetitive.

I've been working in the same field for almost 30 years. I've done everything from being shop clerk to inside sales, supervisor, management and outside sales. I've been working in outside sales exclusively for the past 7 1/2 years and it has the least pressure and best rewards. I get to meet new people all the time and if I don't like 'em, I don't call on 'em any more! I've also been fortunate to generate a nice sideline business fixing computers through many of my sales contacts. While fixing/building computers satisfies my need for mechanical achievement, helping others do a better job with the products/services I sell satifies my desire to help others. There are days when I'd like to just walk away from my current job - when the temps are in the 90's and the humidity is high and everyone is grumpy or looking for someone to yell at. Those are NOT good days. Problem is, we can't control other peoples attitudes and temperment. We can only control our own. So in spite of the grumps, the lumps and the dummies, I'll continue to put a smile on and enjoy my job. Sure beats standing in the unemployment line!! (did that years ago too)

I'm a recruiter for a large transportation company. The person I report to, boss, is 1800 miles away at headquarters. It's a very relaxed atmosphere here, have my own private office, great hours, totally kick back but I get the job done and I do it well. I get to travel a few times a year to trade shows and job fairs and all expenses are picked up by the company.

I would rate my job as a 8 or 9 out of 10. I enjoy it.

I'm a senior system tech for a very large, (globaly large like 30,000+ employees large) telcom vendor, and basically the job is 10+, I drive company truck and work from home, good pay, good benefits, paid vacation, (4weeks, plus sick days and floating holidays), challenging and ever changing work as I do everything from total system installation and implementation, to adds, moves, changes, and repair work. I do hate doing end user training though, people are just not trainable, but my biggest gripe is the big coorporate mentality. All they care about is profit margin, they don't really care about the actual customer anymore and in that respect it really sucks, cause they, (uppermanagement), have no clue what it is really like to do our job, and all they want us to do is bring in more revenue, but they don't even care if we install things right or actually fix problems anymore, they never even ask questions related to that anymore just, "how much were you able to bill them??"

Well I'm sorta self-employed or soon to be.... I plan on buying out my boss when he retires or opening my own custom hot rod shop. I really enjoy my job and rate it as a 10.

That's why I prefer to work alone

I'm a student about to enter college in a little over a month. I waited on getting a summer job because I wasn't sure of my family's vacation plans, and it turned out I waited too late. That's fine though cause I just continued my job from last summer as a correspondent for my local newspaper. I keep in contact with my editor, get sent story ideas, I go do interviews (or whatever is necessary -- research info, etc.), write the story, email it to him, it gets published, I get paid. It's pretty much what Spider-man does, but with writing instead of photography (plus I don't get paid $300 like he does ). The job's mostly for experience since I'm considering becoming a journalist -- I'll begin college registered as a journalism student, but which specific field of journalism I intend to take (if any) is still undecided.

That's about it for me.

I'd rate it a 7, i'm a lifeguard and its alright. Our managing team isn't exactly the best and the city tries to pull one over on us every once in a while but it is still pretty fun and for the most part i enjoy it.

I like my pay rate (although it could always be higher ) and the work I do isn't hard (I'm a shader (Color Matcher) ), but the job security at my place stinks. It's a combination of factors that leads to lack of job security, one the economy isn't great and the owner/top management do a terrible job running the company. The owner is a so-called born again christian but he has people in top management treating employees like numbers, if a person is starting to make too much money or says the wrong thing to the wrong person....he/she is out of a job. I'm going back to college to get my degree in computers. so I can find a better job where you can go into work and enjoy your day. I rate my current job 6 out of 10 and the only reason it's that high is my salary is pretty good.

1 - 10???
I would have to say 12. I am so excited about my new job. I just started July 1st at a local school district that has 3200 networked computers and 10,000 students. I am one of 13 PC Support Specialists. I can't wait to start working with the kids. In the morning before school I am going to be mentoring a WebClub where the students and I will be making webpages for the schools website. Also in the afternoon I am going to be helping a teacher in the Industrial Tech wing while the stucents use computers to go through modules that show how small engines work, rockets, and robotic arms. I can't wait for that to start.

The benefits are amazing and the pay is 40% better than any job of the equivalent in my area of the country. I am sooooo pleased with it so far and it sounds to be exciting once school starts. I will also be doing the normal rum dum fixing of computers but that is what I love to do.
