Yea right next thing they're going to tell us that guns need to be reloaded and tires don't squeal on dirt roads. How dare they impune the integrity of hollywood.

What I am thinking is that your body will displace an equal amount in weight of the quicksand as your body weighs. In other words, if you weigh 100 pounds, the volume of your body will displace 100 pounds of quicksand. This is how boats and ships float. So the greater the density of the quicksand (a slurry of rock and sand like concrete) the higher you will float. If the quicksand consistes more of lighter organic materials and water with a specific gravity of under 1.0...then you are in serious trouble because your entire body will sink under and you will suffocate. Humans are roughly a specific gravity of 1.05 and less..depending on your body fat content. So if your obese, then your a little safer around quicksand...lol
![]() The suction created would relate directly to the viscosity of the quicksand...the more viscous, the longer it would take to remove you with a steady pull. The pull would have to increase as you were pulled further out as well as the quicksand displaced less of your body weight. I hope that makes sense. I saw something similar to this once with a grad student who was getting samples and got into some really soft mud along a bank in a salt marsh. She got down to her upper thighs in the mud and started to panic. I was on the boat and it was too shallow to get the bow up to her. I was concerned her hip waders would start filling up with mud, much like a sea anchor and it would be impossible to get her out. I said to take the straps off her hipwaders and leave them in the mud. I told her to lay down in the mud and crawl out. She gave me a dirty look of course but I meant it. I told her to crawl in the mud and let the mud displace her body. She was really muddy when she got back onboard but it worked. Hypothermia probably would have got to her before suffocation. Water temp was in the lower 50's that day. Laying down probably saved her life. Last edited by David M; 10-04-2005 at 05:12 PM. |

I was always taught to lay back, it spreads your weight across a wider surface area, and can help you get your legs out easier |

More surface area the more your mass is spread out, so you would float easier.
