I'm off...

Well guys, this is my last weekend here in Garrett County Maryland. Monday morning at 11:15AM I will be on my way to Fairbanks Alaska. Its a 12-14 hours trip leaving out of Dullas International Airport near DC. I never realized how hard it would be to leave everything I know and to start over and I havn't even done it yet! Today I spent all day with a long time girl friend of mine who I doubt I'll ever see again. Its hard to think about that.... never seeing someone your that close too again!

Tomorrow I'll be finishing up packing and on sunday my family is throwing me a going away party. I'm excited but also don't want to go, I'm not a person who likes change and this is a pretty big one to say the least! lol

I'll be sure to let everyone know how things are going once I get there, maybe even upload some pics for anyone wanting to know what its like there.

Wish me luck!!

Believe me, with technology the world shrinks every day, and you will if you want to. My girlfriend lives 700 km away from me, she has now for two years, and we manage. Come to think of it, most of my friends I grew up with live at least 700 km away and I still keep in touch with them, and see them every so often. I also have a close but jet-setting friend who's always overseas, she's been living in Germany and has now moved to China, and we're still pretty close

Stay in touch with her, and don't think of it like that

Maybe you mentioned it before and I missed it but what has prompted the move to Alaska?

Me and a friend of mine have been talking about going to Alaska ince we were in 7th grade. The closer we got to graduation the more serious the Alaska talk became and 2 weeks after graduation he got on a bus and now lives there. I wanted to stay for the summer here to see friends and save some money.

Once I get there I hope to get a job working for the railroad as a conductor. Since there is almost no computer related job of any kind up there I wasn't going to go at all untill I decided that right now in my life would be the best time to work with the railroad. I have no wife or kids and can be gone for days at a time without hurting family any. When I'm older and have a family I plan on going to school for IT so that I will have a more stationary job and wont have to be away for days at a time.

To me it just makes sense that this is the best way to do both trains and computers, plus I have always wanted to goto Alaska and like I said, ZI'm not tied down here so nows the time to go.

Good Luck, enhanced08!! Yes, do post some photos!! I know several folks who would absolutely love to have anything to do with trains. Make sure you send some train shots, too. Oh, and watch out for the yellow snow...

You're coming on up to Alaska? And Fairbanks? Weewww. Only been up there a few times(a 4-6 hour drive from where I live), but I hear in the winters it gets really chilly.

Best of luck with the move(in all respects: you and your girl friend and also schooling/jobbing/whatever else might bring you up here).

PS-I would advise an automatic car starter if you plan on getting a car. 7+ months of snow cover with cold temperatures could get tiresome if you have to keep sticking your head out the window to see, not to mention freezing your buns off.

I will be taking 2 of my folding computers with me, my 4Ghz machine (sig) and a P4 2.4 server I have. The others belong to my high school and family computers, but they will still be folding!

Thanks for the tip, ZA I'll look into that.

Well, I best be off, still have some packing to do.

Absolutely take your parka Enhanced08. My dad was stationed there in the Army back in the 50's. Lots of beautiful scenery but coooollllllllldddd in the winter. I have a bunch of slides of pics that he took while he was there. Two inches of ice on the windows inside the barracks. Snow up to your eyeballs. You should see the snow sculptures he and his buddies made.

Best of luck to you.

Wow, big news! So how semi-permanent do you expect the move to be? Will you be there for a while? Do you have a good lead on the job situation? Good luck to you, and let us know how it's going!

I plan on staying there a few years, not real sure how long though. A guess would be 5 years maybe... My job situation... hmm well, from anyone I talk to who either lives there or has gone tells me that jobs are easy to come by up there. Now working with the trains like I wantt to do is a different story as they only post the job openings in December and January (or there abouts) so I'm not even sure if there will be a job open let alone if I'll get one!

The place I'll be staying wants a website and my friend who lives up there told the guy I can do a website for him so depending on what he wants i can do that for awhile. There is also some kind of computer gamming place there. From what I understand its a place that anyone can go and play games against each other, like a LAN party only they supply the computers. I might see if I can get a job there as well, just to hold me over untill I findout about the other openings.

In less that 12 hours from now I'll be on the plane and on my way. I'm not sure when I'll be back online but I'll post back asap!

Thanks for the good wishes!
