This is the kind of help we need in my field of work. I do research in pathology for neurochemical metabolic diseases and money is always an issue. For decades funds in the research fields have been cut due to numerous reasons. It really is a juggle some years with grants. I really admire Billy for his concern in these matters. For years you hear of people talking about helping, but this guy steps up to the plate.

Good on him... always respected him for plowing most of his money back into researching fighting disease in the third world

What I would like to know is (at the risk of offending the mods, and pardon sought in advance if that is the case), which one of Gate's enormously wealthy critics (read other major computer, not just PC, companies) is even doing a third as much in this kind of field.

Thread$ like thi$ always amu$e me.... why? Becau$e everyone when talking bad about Micro$oft alway$ u$e$ the $ $ign for a S and complain$ about hi$ wealth.

Well... now you see what he does with his weath and all is good? I wish people would keep that in mind when complaining about how much they are paying for Microsoft products. Not only does that cost go into the phone tech support, online support and KB, but it goes to some good in this world... something that there isn't enough of these days.

Hal,
I could not agree more. I have always thought the exact same thing. The money he gives goes directly to the NIH which is what funds the research that makes gret advances. Quite an impact on the world as a whole. I can attest first hand his influence has helped many. Following in line with the thread others that are in the spot light in our society, be it actors to politicians talk about helping and doing. And I know that it helps being the richest person on the planet, but it is his choice to forget people or help people. Nice choice.

I never watch the mainstream media anymore but I would be willing to bet that ABC, CBS, CNN and NBC did not make any mention of this because it puts a wealthy, capitalist entrepreneur in good light. Maybe MSNBC...but then..guess why.

I use the M$ symbol all the time, but I have never criticised M$'s pricing... I know that a lot of the pricing isn't their fault as such, and I've known about the Bill Gates Foundation since high school, and always knew that was where most of his money went, he's just been more vocal about it recently
