Of course it's gonna pop if you remove the heatsink...you don't have to overclock it to make that happen.

Never heard of a CPU actually exploding though, I just thought they always went up in smoke.

Well no, since it has thermal protection built in to shut it down if it gets too hot. But if there was a way to disable that *muhaaaa*

Btw, this should probably be moved to General discussion

So true. I mean they blew a hole through the desk, so they also have to find a way to fix that... But it was cool.

Cool. Do you think the guy could be any shakier?

Obviously that was going to happen - there are heatsinks for a reason....

Do note that I recently closed a very similar thread - this kind of discussion really isn't what the Mech is about. We fix computers here, not destroy them intentionally.

The Durons did not have thermal protection. In fact, the Athlon XP do not have thermal protection built into the processor either. AMD only recently added it to all K8s.

kram, I was referring to the Pentium 4. You are quite correct the Durons did not have protection - thus the exploding CPU.

If you look closely you can tell that set-up if fake...

A duron running 4ghz on 3volts....not gonna happen.....not to mention the pc wasn't running....Your 1st should have been the heatsink wasn't latched down and the fan wasn't running.....the chip would have blew long before it did if it had been actually running and he'd never made it that far on air....

pyrotechniks use little chip to creat the bang...these chip create more down ward force than upward....hence the hole in the wood table...if the chip would have blown on it's own the core wouldn't still be pretty much intact.....

This was a ploy from the very start.....

I probably have about 20-30 pc's just laying around that re-furb from time to time...I have from socket 7 266's to P-III 550mhz some duron's and others....

These make good internet surfers....I refurb them and give them to people who can't really afford one other wise...young school kids need them for home work.....It's much better to give them to them than to break it and have to fill the garbage can with them....

I agree that the video is bogus... if you look at the end of it.. the core is still intact except for the corners. Tom's Hardware did testing of removing a heatsink and all it did was fry the CPU. There is nothing in a CPU that would actually case an explosion.

I'm doubting it too...I don't think there's anything explosive in the CPU.

Now that you mention it...it wouldn't be hard to put a squib under the CPU in the hollow part of the socket or under the motherboard itself. I was pretty surprised when the overheating Duron exploded and you could still see the core on the processor...and to see the P4 "explode" seemed pretty strange since P4s have thermal protection built in.

Hoax.

I had an 800mhz duron that I fried like that, only it was an accident. I was playing with a pelt trying to cool the chip and took the HS/F off while it was running, not thinking. It tool only seconds before i smelled the smoke and thats all it was. No explosion or anything, just smoke and no monitor display.

If you watch at the end of the second video when the chip blows and he picks it up. Thats fake right there, the chip would be too hot to touch. I had my P4 4Ghz machine running naked on the table, i shut it down and took the cpu out for some reason (don't remember why) and it was so hot it burnt my fingers. So if it got hot enough to blow then it must have been much hotter than mine was.
