anyone see King Kong?
Anyone see King Kong yet? The reviews are great, but considering how much $$$ they spent on it (about 230 million) it got off to a fairly slow start this weekend in the box office. I wanna see it though at some point. Saw "Syriana" last week, good movie but I had really high expectations so I was slightly dissapointed. Anyone have an opinion on King Kong?

Haven't seen King Kong yet, but I just might. I'm really looking forward to "Munich" which is coming out this friday.

I probably won't see either until they're on DVD. I much prefer watching movies at home than going to a theater, better sound and a better atmosphere.
Hopefully, by the time King Kong comes out on DVD I'll have finally purchased my projector.

I will probably take my son to see King Kong. It gives us something to do. Otherwise I prefer to see movies via Netflix. King Kong is getting excellent reviews.

I saw it on Saturday. I didn't buy the whole "woman falls in love with giant 25-foot ape" premise, but aside from that, it's a pretty good flick. It's definitely a Peter Jackson movie, so if you liked the visuals and drama of the LOTR movies, you will probably like this one.

i saw it too.
very good movie. for a 3 hr movie, it went at a good pace. didnt seem like it was 3hrs. the backdrop of 1930's new york was excellent. you really felt like thats what the 30's looked like. great story. i thought peter jackson did a great job.

Not really interested. My, are directors so limited in intelligence that they have to keep remaking old movies because they can't come up with new ideas?
I'd rather see a mediocre new film than a bombastic super refined version of a dead horse.

I saw King Kong...the original one from 1933 and the remake from 1976. But I haven't seen Peter Jackson's King Kong.
Looks like "Munich" will be pretty good...has an excellent international cast. I won't be going to the theater though...I wait till the movie comes out on DVD. Taking care of my ailing Mom and don't have time to go to the movies. Cricket

looks like a am gonna seek kong this week. I saw someone on Conan one night, can't remember who now but someone very knowledgable of screen making and he said that Peter Jackson and his crew, in terms of technology and special effect ability, are light years ahead of anyone else today. Basically he's got all the best people on his team down there in New Zealand i believe. yea Munich looks pretty good too. still haven't seen Walk the Line

I don't go to the movies much at all so I doubt I'll go to King Kong either. Personally I've already had my fill of it anyway. Why? Because one night I was watching a tv program and it seemed like every time they went to a commercial, the promo for King Kong was played. You know how you hear a song and get it stuck in your head? The same can be said for most anything you hear, I guess, because for 2 or 3 days after that I kept thinking to myself "I give you....KONG!!!!" like that promo kept saying.

Kong was a good movie, excellent effects on Kong himself.
However I find it hard to believe that at the end when he dies, he can fall that far and not go *splat* or anything... |

I might be seeing the film, but are people mostly going to see it because it was directed by peter jackson?

exactly, so the film is guarenteed to be a success, because of the director's reputation. Not because people want to go and see a film.

I thought it was spectacular. Everything about it was done well. The movie was somewhat long such that towards the end, my impression of the beginning had faded a bit. BUT, at just the right times, a refresher comment is plugged right in.
Jimmy... the reason people go *SPLAT* when the fall a large distance, is because the mass ratio between a person and the ground is so small. Concrete is so much more rigid and has a higher density and mass than a person so the person's body deforms at impact. With a larger beast, sure the beast will deform a bit, but the ground will absorb much more of the impact. Although it's not a super-accurate analogy, think about a tennis ball hitting a wall. The ball will bounce back pretty far. When a person falls, they don't bounce but that *bouncing energy* ends up deforming the person's body. Then think about throwing a lead ball at a wall. Chances are that the wall will absorb more of the energy of the collision this time and deform greater than the ball will. Anyways, again, excellent movie, but some squeamish parts. Not for small children or insect-loathing women.

I saw the original (All my friends who missed Fay Wray are going to this one) and I was rooting for the big guy.
I'll probably rent this one for home viewing (32" Sony). |

I saw King Kong tonight with my son. I looked down at my watch about an hour into the movie and realized that this is going to be a long 3 hours. The special effects are spectacular but the acting and plot is mediocre at best. It would not have been realistic for me to expect any better from a movie named King Kong. I guess my expectations going in were higher than what they should have been after reading the reviews which drooled over the movie.
At times I found it hard to take seriously scenes which were supposed to be serious. I saw all the old rehashed Hollywood stereotypes that people my age have seen many times over. I found myself rooting for the bugs and the dinosaurs at times because they did not develop the characters well enough to care about their fate. Maybe at 45 I am whining and just need to understand that the typical movie audience is somewhere in their early 20's It's a real shame that Hollywood relies pretty much on special effects now to bring people into the box office. Rarely now do we find new releases with sophisticated plots and excellent acting. I cannot remember the last movie which required a decent amount of intelligence to understand. For me a good movie is one which has me thinking about it for the next few days. Perhaps Hollywood has figured out that by dumbing down movies that they are more likely attract those who are more likely to shell out 9 bucks for something that matches their level of sophistication? Perhaps the audience for sophisiticated plots and excellent acting are more likely to have a home theatre and are willing to wait for it to come out on DVD? If it were not for the excellent special effects, King Kong would be no better than the original version or any other 1950's Godzilla style B-movie. Hopefully Mystery Science Theatre 3000 will come back and make an episode for this version of King Kong? I'm sure it would be good for some laughs. Last edited by David M; 12-28-2005 at 01:20 AM. |
