Lost a Friend Today

A few weeks ago we noticed that my dog, an 11 year old golden retriever, wasn't acting quite right, she was lissless and just not herself. So we took her in and we found she had a bladder infection and treated that, but things still were not right. We took her to an animal hospital near us and had some X-rays done which revealed two lumps in her lung, which turned out to be cancer. We had some surgery for this lump on her neck, which had been there for sometime, to be removed and a few days after that surgery she seemed OK, but in the past two days she has declined greatly. Today we noticed she was even worse and seemed to be having trouble getting up and done and was panting heavily.

So we just made the decision to have her put down. My dad is taking her now to the animal hospital. We could tell she wasn't herself and we thought it was best to not let her suffer. Kind of a morbid thing to have to do on Christmas Day, but we are going to be leaving for a few hours to see family and we didn't want her to have problems while we were gone and have no one to help her. We all could tell during the gift unwrapping that something wasn't right with her and so we all decided it was best.

I don't mean to upset anyone or ruin this day, but I guess I just need to vent a little grief...

This was given to us when we put our dog down for similar reason, still makes me cry today, I feel your pain.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Unhappy

Sorry to hear about your loss buddy. But it's kinda wild that you posted this because we just had to schedule our four year old Cairn Terrier Peanut for surgery. Somehow she managed to tear a tendon/ligament completely off her leg bone rendering her right rear leg useless. She's been limping around on three legs for days but luckily she doesn't seem to be in any pain whatsoever which is certainly odd but is good nonetheless. Sorry again.

I'm so sorry catacon. Golden's are great dogs. Pets become family members and I know how hard it is to lose a pet. Sorry it had to happen over the holidays. Think of all the joy though that your dog brought you over the years.

Not a dog person...

.... but I've lost a cat to age and ill-health (still miss him, I keep checking doors).
They're in our lives and deserve 'memory'.

Trust me I have been though that. It is the right decision.

We had one that had an operation to remove some and it was just a few weeks later she was pretty bad. Dad knew what needed to be done but brought her home to Mom, as it was Her Mothers dog and kind of a last link for her.

Anyways that night, you could tell (Lady) knew what was happening, she couldn't lay down, was exhausted, we gave her extra breathing medicine. trying to give her some relief. Next morning they had to take her to the vet to have her put down. It is not an easy decision, but one I have no doubt it is the right one.

(this post took me probably ten minutes to wright, memories)

Yeah, we still have a lot of memories of Jessie. Everytime we see dog hair piled in the corner or see her empty bed we get a little choked up.

Thanks for all your posts.
