Custom Avatar - How?

OK, I see the "Do not use an avatar" radio button with the note under it saying that clicking the button will wipe out any custom avatar, but I don't see the radio button for choosing one's own custom avatar. What am I missing?

Thanks!

You must be a 11-bit status member (1024 post) or greater in order to chose your own custom avatar.

Or become a PC Mech Supporter (I believe).

That makes sense. Something like $30 a year? Looks well worth it to me.

Correct - you need 1024 posts or become a supporter to use a custom avatar.

A couple more things to keep in mind. The Supporter fee is meant to offset the advertising you normally see as popups. When you become a Supporter, those ads disappear. And the 1024 posts do not include posts in the General Discussion area.

Have read about this avatar stuff since joining forums. Is there any advantage to having an avatar, custom or not, or is it just a personal choice? Can't figure out the big deal. RevCLB

Besides being able to customize your signature, an avatar is nothing more than a little bit of expression. Like in mine I have my computer case - just a little bit about me, showing that I like computers and stuff.

It helps to identify members quickly. If you know what a member's avatar looks like you can find his posts easier than having to read all the user names in a thread.

If you have an image of decent size which you would like to display, you can always make sure it fits the size limit and stick it in your signature.

I use mine to find when I last posted in a thread, and also to screen other posts so I can skip past the ones I don't like (fortunately not many of these)

It's not vitally important, or worth post padding for, it just helps a little. If you use it to express a bit about yourself, bully for you. I personally use mine to scare people away from reading my posts so they don't wreck their computers doing something stupid like actually listening to me

Rev, you paid to be a supporter. You can use a custom avatar right now if you want.

It just so happens it's actually PR's, although I touched it up to make him a little more palatable

You mean this wasn't always in GD??

You can go here and change your avatar (I think the link will get you there). You can upload a small picture or link to one. (Or choose a preset one)

Also, go here and enter in a signature.
