beached thames whale dies
A Northern bottle-nosed whale that swam up the river thames beaches itself twice on a london beach(type thing). a team started a rescue operation at 9:30(GMT) this morning. The Whale was put onto inflatable pontoons(cant spell) and loaded onto a barge to be released in the Thames estury(where the mother has been sighted. And 5 mins walk from my house). sadly during the last hour the Whales health took a turn for the worse. Then at 7:00 pm (GMT) the Whale sadly died.
Not much has been released yet but read and watch this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4635874.stm Experts believe it beached itself because it knew it was going to die/ |

Been following this - shame really.
Course we have all the doom and gloom merchants banging out about why we even bothering. Thousands of children will die today and your wasting your time on a single whale. But i think 24hours worth of effort to help an endangered animal doesn't really compare to the large scale socio-economic required to put all the world to rights

But How often do you see a northern bottle-nosed whale in the Thames. Sure we now have some small seals living in it but that doesnt compare.

If this animal had a gene mutation which causes it to swim up fresh water bodies, do you want it carrying that newly mutated gene to its offspring? If that is the case then it is better to let it die than for humans to intervene. Sometimes emotions and not logic causes people to want to save an animal. Also, this animal could have been food for other animals. What happens now?.. it gets a necropsy in some lab where it will be removed from the food chain. Unless man is the direct reason an animal is in danger of some sort, then it is better to leave it alone and let nature take its course. This is what is best for the specie as a whole.

lol the rescuers got parking tickets
http://www.theregister.com/2006/01/23/whale_fines/ Don't think leaving it alone was an option - the idea of a 5-7 tonne carcass rotting on a river bank in the middle of london may not go down to well with the health department

Where I live they tow dead whales out to sea. Sharks eventually finish off the carcass. A few years ago, scientists where I work did a necropsy on a juvenile humpback on the boatramp where I work. It was fascinating but the smell was the most gawd awfull stench you could ever imagine....add to that tens of thousands of flys. They cut it apart with razor sharp machettes on ten foot poles. They had to wear hip waders to get around in the rotting flesh and had to wear masks so the flies would not get in their mouths. After the necropsy, the body parts were hauled off on a truck with huge fiberglass tubs where it will be buried for ten years, unearthed and then the bones will displayed in a local aquarium. It was pretty gross, but really interesting to see.

People will buy anything. I should try putting an old pair of underwear up for sale on EBAY.

Its not cool to say stuff like that in here.Edit: I thought it was funny as well and I am the opposite of politically correct but there is a place for everything. Last edited by David M; 01-24-2006 at 11:30 AM. |

Unbelievable...some people have more green matter than grey matter.
...and they are soon to be parted.
