I need to ship a desktop PC in a steel case across the country...
I need to ship a desktop PC I built for my brother across the fruited plain. I am quite confident that the tower box with the foam supports will not be enough to support the hardware components I will install for the PC.
What kind of boxes do the big brand name PC companies use to ship there computers, and where can I get my hands on one? Supposively Dell uses some kind of double box system or something. Ideas and suggestions anyone? Thanks. |

They use multiple boxes in a big box. Styro supports on the inner boxes.
Suspect your tower will survive with the original case box packed in another with 2 inch corner supports. Or even 2 inches of styro peanuts. |

I would actually avoid styrofoam peanuts.. things shift too much with them.

Corner supports *and* peanuts packed tight to make it rigid.

I shipped it double boxed stuffed with peanuts and it arrived safely at its destination.
For future reference, what are corner supports? Are they add-ons I can buy, or are certain boxes manufactured with them? |

Just as they sound.. they are styrofoam pieces that hold th item by the corners.

If you want to ship it cross country I have seen scientific samples and sampling equipment sent in plastic ice chests (well taped closed and labeled) and in Pelican Cases( rather expensive but very tough). Both are much tougher than cardboard. UPS, FedEx and DHL will handle them. I would surround it with bubble wrap or that soft black foam (not the white styrofoam). Don't bother with foam peanuts...they are messy and shift.
