Tax write offs and school

I am tax retarded, putting it mildly. And i was wondering if anybody could tell me if it is possible to write off a new computer for school. I am a full time student and i need to build a computer for myself. If anybody knows or could point me in the right direction it would help me out a load.

I doubt that it would get you as much as the standard deduction on a short form unless you have a LOT of other writeoffs.

no, not realy any other write offs, just trying to keep options open. Being in college mean being broke 24/7. So little funds for a computer. I was just looking for options to help me pay for my computer.

I Googled "irs student deductions computer" and the first hit from the IRS is:

http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq-kw53.html

If you must buy the computer from the school and no where else then there is a way to deduct something, hope credits or some such thing. You'll need to read all the links- are you paying the cost of school? That looks to be a condition.

before I would attempt such a move, I would definitely discuss this with a tax professional...your school might even have one on staff.

sdkfz, thanks for the links. When i learn to speak tax I think they will help me.

mbossman2, no doubt about that. I wouldnt do anything of the such without help from somone who knows the field, as i have next to no education or anything of the such in tax law.

David M, yes i was born and raised in the USA. Georgia more precise. And attend school in Ga.
