Worcester State College / laptop database- stolen & lost

I work at WSC have a look at what we are doing about faculty, school owned and students laptops.

It sounds pretty nifty, but that still unfortunately doesn't counter the problem of trying to identify something after the identification numbers/stickers were scratched/ripped off.

But time will tell.

I have seen some technology that makes taking off with someone's wireless laptop a bit riskier. it is a mapping appliance that triangulates a wireless device's location via the wireless AP's. It can also be used to track and locate in real time as well as "show me everywhere this laptop has been over the last X days" feature. All you need is the MAC address of the wireless adaptor and bingo bango bongo the trace is on and location (or exit point) is quickly found.

yes, there are some definite big brother aspects and uses, but like any tool it can be used for good things and bad things.

this can also use RFID tags to do the same thing.
