PCMech kind of slow
I have noticed that the site has been quite slow today and yesterday. I did a traceroute and it looks like the problem is in the 2nd to last hop.

Hal
Am I right in concluding that PC Mech is being routed through somebody's internal network to pick up a banner ad? Great. CH |

The ads are placed on the page just like any other image, but since they're at the top, if the ad server doesn't respond right away the rest of the page may take time to load.
Personally, I say blame your browser . I don't like ad banners any more than the rest of you, but it's silly for a page to fail to load because one banner or image at the top doesn't respond. Netscape 6.x and Mozilla don't have this limitation, and Netscape 4.x doesn't to an extent (if you hit the stop button, the rest of the page will continue to load).Xayd |

Hmmm - I get 192.168.1.5 for my second to last hop - what are private IP addresses doing on the Internet?

It's the slowest loading of all sites I visit daily, but always has been. It has been even slower lately. I think that's where all my link naks are coming from.

It sure is the slowest. Bad part is that when someone posts a link for info, etc, it won't even leave PCMech. I usually have to write the address down and enter it myself. Works alot faster that way.

There are days when I can't get in at all. (using dialup) Meaning if the page won't load in under two minutes I give up.

Was slow for a few days, now back to normal.
I'm on 56k, but when 'normal' I have no complaints- pages open fast enough for me. |

Hey guys,
I noticed this the other day, and at the same time I could not FTP to the server. It turned out there was a craahed FTP daemon. Doesn't affect the public side of things, but there must have been some resource problems at the time. This site is intense and costly to host. I should probably optimize this database, too. Its getting pretty damn big. |
