Happy 50th B-Day to the Hard Drive

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...UGH3L23T01.DTL

The first hard drive (RAMAC) -- delivered on Sept. 13, 1956 -- weighed 2,140 lbs and stored 5 megabytes of data.

In 1956, the RAMAC cost $50,000, or $10,000 per MB. Today, a GB of storage on a 3.5-inch hard drive can cost less than 50 cents .

Hahaha... I actually burst out laughing after reading the weight and its storage capacity.

It sounds like something out of a joke book

But I suppose everything has to come from somewhere...

They were pretty good as replacements for what was used before. And they sure did cut down on the card sorting.
But when they crashed there was much wailing and knashing of teeth. The replacement devices which were announced in 1959 were much more compact and jacked storage to 30 fixed and 30 removable.
