Does anyone know of a good book to get started in photography? TIA

depends on which part of photography you are interested in, digital or film.
or just learning the skills in being able to take good pictures. back when I was learning kodak had many good books on using the camera in almost every field, like advertising, studio, portrait, industrial, making photos for books, and many other fields. there may still be some in a library. |

It's digital I'm interested on, first. It will be an expensive hobby and I don't want to make it even more unaffordable by dealing with films.

Books are helpful to a point. It really takes practice to develop your eye.
I suggest photo.net for a primer. A darkroom class on printing helped me a lot. |

another big help would be to get a photoediting program like photoshop or paintshop pro.
you will fing it very helpful to be able to edit some pictures to end up the way you want. |

I received a copy of Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography as a gift several years ago. I picked up many good ideas on framing pics just from his included example photos. It's well written, but it comes with lots of basics. He does cover some ground you may be unfamiliar with, though. He also includes tips on Photoshop and some of the best plug-ins for it.

Check out some books from your library. They are free of course and you get a nice variety. No one book is going to teach you everything. The basics are still the same, lighting, composition, symmetry, filters etc whether it is film or digital.

Hey NK,
Time Life put out a series of books (something like 19 - 20) years ago; kinda like an encyclopedia set. If you can find that set, you'd be well covered. Also, depending on if you have any specific needs, there are specialty books, like for architecture and the like. Books that study the masters are always a good choice. HTH TR |

Como estas? Been a long time since I have been around here. I too have started messing with photography more than I do PC's for the time being. I shoot a Nikon D50 with various lenses and have learned alot by just visiting forums. My favorite as far as content and atmosphere is www.nikoncafe.com but they are a nikon based club. They run a tight ship there just like they do here so you will only get help by some of the best in photography. If you are shooting a non-nikon than go over to www.steves-digicams.com and check out their forums. They are not as strict and sometimes there are some useless posts but for the most part its a great site. I have visited many digital photo sites and these by far are they top ones. Talk to you soon.
