Got to play a PS3 today
Today I was over at Sony's Metreon in San Francisco seeing a movie. Sony owns the place and they had some PS3's set up for the public to play on.
The resolution is much better than the old PS2's but not quite up to the resolution of the best PC games played on a high end computer with a large monitor. But then, its hard to beat the MSRP of $600 bucks ($500 for the PS3 with less memory) that the PS3 is going to sell for. I used the game controller with the motion sensor. There is some lag in it which was a little frustrating. It was not responsive enough either. You just have to anticipate a little sooner which way you want to steer. I played some offroad rally game where you drive around steep cliffs whose name I forgot. One of the consoles was set up on a 1080i television... That was very impressive because it brings you right into the game. I did not see any framerate lag....not like the lag you see when it drops below 60 FPS. The Blu-Ray games are going to sell for around $60 bucks...yeowie! Is it worth it? Yeah, compared to what you would pay for an equivalent gaming PC. You will defiantly want to invest in a big monitor though to make good use of all the eye candy. I think it is going to be some serious competition to the high end gaming computers.

You know though, 60 bucks for games isn't too bad. I had a Sega Genesis and I remember purchasing Imported Video games that were averaging 70 bucks a game. I remember paying 100 bucks for a batman game. Also, remember laser disks? Remember just how expensive they were? The average price for a laser disk was 70 bucks and the cheap ones were 40 bucks. (Laser disks, for those that might be too young to remember, were about 12 inches in diameter and it usually took both sides of a disk to get an entire movie on it. CAV format often took 2 disks) But the PS3 sounds like it will be quite impressive.
