Need a good input

I wrote some time ago in regard to my PC; a Windows Me that act up and since has not been the same.
Now I cannot even run my sofware for card making and this has got me bummed
My question is:
What will be cheaper for me? to buy a new tower.... or the whole thing?, even though I have a new flat screen and a new key board with a real nice mouse; the PC is the only one that is 6 years old, so I really don't need all these things. I like my PC very much, I am so used to it, but as I said, is getting dificult to go around.
A friend of mine said, it will be cheaper to buy a new set, than to try to fix it, just because I need the Millenium software; I never got it when I bought it, and when I contacted the Microsoft company, they inform me that I need to buy for it as an extra.

So, returning to my question, can you tell me if TOWER or the whole package? and what brand do you suggest?

If you have a good lcd already then just buy the tower. Assuming you're not wanting to build a computer, the best place to buy usually is Dell. HERE is a great deal dell has right now, might expire soon though.
it would help us better if you described your needs and uses of the computer more.

Thanks for the info, and to reply Jimmy, my pc is for my own personal chores like read and write e mails, see and edit my own digital pictures, sometimes save on cd and other print them, search fro news, and for graphics, I like to make my own holiday cards, I use the word processor to make my regular mail and also the envelopes, like to make my own labels and print recipes etc
I like to hear, find new music and copy on my cd I use the web cam to comunicate with my relatives and friends and also I save on floppies some documents.

To answer the guy name Whubbard, I wrote before with the same name but in a different
forum: Windows ME/9x and DOS, but I couldn't make it work. I am a self taugh person, I learrn by doing it and by common sense.... sometime it fails me so, I ask.

Thanks for the advise I will study the information . I need time to read and to digest it.

the system I linked you to in my first reply should be perfect for your needs. Its a great deal for the price, for a similar PC you're normally going to pay at least $500.

just make sure on the optical drive section you select a cd/dvd burner. By default it only comes with a dvd-rom.

Is your computer a home built one or a name brand computer? Do you know the specs?

Have you considered installing Windows XP Home on it?

FYI, from what I have gathered on these forums and in my own personal experience, Windows Me is probably the worse OS that Microsoft has written. It's not you at all. Definately get a computer than can run Windows XP. XP is much more stable and bug free by comparison. I agree with purchasing a Dell if you are looking for the least inexpensive computer possible. It is not possible to build and equivalent computer for $500-600. You may want to increase the RAM to 1 gig.

If you do not know your computer specs you can go to Belarc.com and download the free Belarc Advisor software. People here will be able to tell you if it is worth running XP on your current computer or if it is better to purchase a new computer.

I might suggest buying Windows 2000 or XP, and install it over ME. Shouldn't really have to upgrade the pc if you're going to buy win2k.

I know this differs from the advice given thus far, but my reading of your posts suggests it might be worthwhile to offer specifcs on your current PC problems before spending money on a new system. If you are able and willing to articulate your current PC's problems online, peopel here might be able to get your system working.

Of course, this solution assumes a few things about your preferences.

Just my opinion.

win 2K, if you are willing to go through all the updates is not a bad idea. Its less of a resource hog than xp, and should be cheaper aswell. just remember to get a gd firewall and antivirus softarwe and spyware scanner pre hand.

just keep in mind, he may end up spending $100 on XP and another one or two hundred on upgrading components to get that old PC working good. That Dell I linked was only $400 and was a pretty good system.

No doubt, Jimmy, that might be an excellent choice. I also felt that no one here had much information about the system he was using, no solid evidence the OS would have to be replaced or upgraded, and no sense of what the problems really are with the system. Because of all that I felt it would be wise to play devils' advocate and at least get him/her thinking about figuring out the problems before buying a new system.

Hey guys, thanks a lot to everyone for your support and good advice. I don't think I wiil adventure to build a computer, but eventually I'll buy my next computer XP, perhaps after Chritsmas..... Righ now I have WINDOS ME and also my lap top Windows XP.

To tell you the truth, I got my pc fix, after 3 days taken all the junk, cleaning files and later fixing the files, this gave me the most problems, I got to defragment. I have back my help area and now I am more at ease, I was elated, so happy that I did it. Even my friend the "nerd" give up on it, and I said this in the nicest way..... but..... I still have one problem, I don't know how to solve, when I put my software to make my holiday cards, I get this window:

Error extracting support files.
Error loading type library/DLL.

Any suggestion?

After all this, I think it may be time for a fresh start - either reinstall ME or upgrade it to 2000 or XP. Please post some specs - processor speed, amount of physical ram, hard drive size with amount of free space.

When ME works, it's not too bad. When it breaks, it's very difficult to repair.

I don't think any of this is that complex, personally. I think it was very simply a lack of familiarity with computers which led to most, if not all, of these issues. His friend is taking care of most of the problems now for him, but most of it was simply cleaning.
