What does "lol" mean?

I'm probably showing my age and what a sheltered life I lead - but what is this "lol" I see everywhere now?

Thanks Doc,

Hmm..That's what my teenage sons told me. I've seen it used at the end of offensive messages on gaming forums...must be an example of teenage sarcasm(he said half-loling to himself)....

Great link! Now I can really impress my sons with some really cool acronyms!

"Lol" seems a bit wimpy to me. I much prefer "ROFLMAO". Now that's a real man's acronym.

Sorry moderator - but I've just found a new way to embarass my teenage sons. Net acronyms will no longer be cool in our house now that old dad uses them.

Hi Mike,
Your signature is wrong. That is for a teenager turned twenty. You've heard "hire a teenager, they know everything", haven't you? Once they get in their twenties, they're kinda useless for awhile.

I was useless at twenty, I am useless at thirty, and I intend to be useless at forty, fifty, and sixty. If I make it that far.

Don't worry RJ.

I'm really only 18.

I just posted this so we could weed out all the grumpy old men on these forums.

archie: I've never heard or used IMCO before, the one I use (and most common) is IMHO (In My Humble/Honest Opinion). Add to that IMO, when I'm not so humble.

Archie,

IMCO I think it means the poster has considered the matter carefully be giving his considered opinion.

It not quite as humble as Doc's IMHO and bit less humble than Doc's IMO.

A poster who uses IMCO is a man who should command respect because of his good breeding, looks, and curteous but businesslike manner.

He is man you can trust. You would buy a computer from this sort of man with no qualms about shoddy workmanship or sub-standard components.

He would never try to sell you a PC Chips motherboard.

IMCO,

Mike

"brevity code
(DOD, NATO) A code which provides no security but which has as its sole purpose the shortening of messages rather than the concealment of their content."
from:http://www.dtic.mil/doctrine/jel/dod...a/b/00964.html

So that means LOL is a brevity code; an acronym is spoken as a word. SCUBA, for example.

"ac·ro·nym (kr-nm)
n.
A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging"

from www.dictionary.com

Geez, I need a life.

i am extremely confused by mike brek's posts. Are you a dad? are you a 18-year old? and if you are a 18-year old why would you want people to think you are a dad! LOL, this is weird

Jotto,

It's all just a bit of humourous banter. Don't take it seriously.

I am a dad and I am 47. You see, when you get older, humour helps to take the pain out of fading good looks.

So getting back to the original question - does "lol" mean "laughing out loud" or "lots of luck".

Like I said before, I'm pretty sure it's Laughing Out Loud. But if you're talking about butter, then it could be Land O'Lakes.

The "official" meaning is Laughing Out Loud, but of course there are "individual" meanings for it, too.
