E-MAIL virus cure??

glc will probably move this, but here goes. I received this "tip" to stop the spread of e-mail spam viruses, and am throwing it up for conversation/opinions.

"Create a contact in your e-mail address book with the name !0000 with no email address in the details. This contact will then show up as your first contact. If a virus attempts to do a 'send all' on your contact list, your pc will pop up an error message saying that: "The message could not be sent. One or more recipients do not have an e-mail address. Please check your address book and make sure all the recipients have a valid e-mail address.' You click on OK and the offending (virus) message would not have been sent to anyone".

"Of course, no changes have been made to your original contacts list. The offending (virus) message may then be automatically stored in your 'drafts' or 'outbox' folder. Go in there and delete the offending message. Problem is solved and virus will not be spread."

"This also works with any name as long as there isn't an e-mail address. Point to make: Some e-mail programs won't allow you to make a new contact without an address associatiated. If this is the case, create a fictitious address like !0000@novirus.com"

I think in this case outlook would still send to all then as the bogus address has been sent to the smtp server

Nope, it should work. It'll fail to send to that address, cause it's invalid. Unless I'm mistaken, it's because ! means 'not', so how can an address be !address.

It'll give you a failed to send due to invalid recipients error or some such, and if you didn't send it, you know something's goin on.

Then again, if you're using Outlook Express you might have trouble catching the hint .
