Now that's a stupid invention! Put that in the US and you'd have a ready made lawsuit-maker!

hahaha, That seems like a HUGE lawsuit maker, although nobody would get any money seeing that ONLY CERTIFIED VEHICLES should pass.

All the vehicles are right hand drive and the red van is a Royal Mail delivery van which makes it somewhere in the UK.
I am not 100% certain but I think it is Oxford Street in London.

edit..take that back it's not Oxford Street, the department store on the right of the picture at the begining looks like Harrod's which puts it in Knightsbridge, London.

I can see using some like that for stopping terrorists...but regular everyday drivers?..how stupid! What's wrong with using automated crossing gates like we see in every pay for garage in the entire world?

Really the most stupid thing the city engineers did was put up a camera so whoever goes flying through the windshield can subpoena the video tapes and file a lawsuit against the city.

It was pretty shocking to see the lady pull the small child out of the back seat.

I saw it earlier today on another forum.

What has this got to do with city planning? They did this on purpose. They have similar things on college campuses but the posts have to be manually taken down/put up.

Aside from that, what if you forget that they are there? I would say that the city is Liable for the damages to all of those cars. (At least if it were in America they would be. (I want to drive an M1 Abrams over that stupid thing. I'll bust down those pillars!)

Not if there's a sign that says something to the effect of do not enter, authorized vehicles only, or something like that. It's just like the one way tire spikes on a pivot at the exit of parking lots.

These are quite common in the UK now, and I have to say not 'stupid planners', more 'stupid drivers'. Obviously they will cause some genuine accidents, but for me there's only one reason why the drivers in that clip were going so fast, and so close behind the authorised vehicles, and that was to try and 'beat' the bollards. If you're that lazy to risk something obviously quite dangerous - especially with a child in the car - then you deserve a written-off car.

The initial clip showed how prominently signed the bollards were - I've seen some much less 'obvious' than that, and yes - this does need to change if they're gonna roll out rising bollards nationally.

FK

P.S. That clip was taken in Manchester

I agree. The posts are a good deterrant... it would easily get rid of 90% of the drivers in Toronto...

yea...

I thought that was funny... you can obviously tell all of the drivers knew they were there and just trying to beat them .... thats why they were so close to the bus as it took off...

I am sure the aera was clearly marked... it's just stupid people trying to one-up the system... I am sure they feel more stupid once this happens to them and are quick to blame the city instead of themselves when they are trying to defeat the block....Kinda like when people go around train crossing gaurds....

one persons stupidity is always good for another persons laugh...

If I was the city I would probably sue the driver of the vehical that had the child in it for reckless endangerment of a minor.... I feel it's fine to do with what you want with your own life...but not with the presence of others OR children...

But why use something so potentially destructive to a car and dangerous to people? Why not an automated crossing gate?...which would have the same effect of making someone stop and wait. Even tire spikes cause less damage.

It might even be cheaper to use small automated roadside bombs....which would have the same effect of seriously damaging vehicles and injuring people.

You'd have to explain that one to me David, don't have them over here. Would it do the same job as letting certain vehicles (busses, taxis etc) pass - i assume by using some sort of RF controller in these vehicles - whilst preventing regular road users from accessing those routes?

Why use something so destructive??? I think this gets brought up in other threads... to teach people to stop thinking about just themselves and that laws and restrictions are in place for a reason. I really hope that these people not only have a huge expense to fix their cars, but that they are fined as well... they have no respect for society.

crossing gaurds arent as effective.... in all the cases in the video the cars would have gotten thru and maybe caused a potentially more harmfull accident...

We all know that when the crossing guard comes down and hits the top of the vehical it goes back up a bit....potentially letting more than one mad dashed driver thru...happens here all time....quite a bit of train accident from people trying to beat the gaurd...and that delays the product in the train from getting to its destination in a timely manner... could be UPS shipping in there with your PC parts...

Don't you have parking garages in England where you have to pay to get out? You put your paid ticket in a machine and an arm goes up letting you out.

We have transceivers here you can rent that deduct from your checking account every time you cross a bridge. Each transceiver has a unique code. Here it is called FastTrac. The same idea probably applies to the barriers which pop out of the ground allowing only certain vehicles to pass.

A good idea but terrible design. Seems like if you added something like a railroad crossing guard in the back that came down whenever the front poles came up that would fix it.
