HP takes over Compaq

I personally feel that's really bad news especially that hp makes realy bad computers and that their will be less competition and their is not gona be any pressior from anyone on hp to make their computers better.

It may not be much for personal computer users but it will help the companies that use high end servers. Both HP and Compaq servers are very well made and supported.

According to Spiegel a German News paper - Magazin - HP has taken over Compaq may the new comps which will come out eventually will be named Hpcrap..LOL

Well I guess Lexmark won't be making Compaq printers any more.

The other question is will there eventually be no Compaq computer or will HP keep the name? Also what about the Alpha processor?

Here are some stats:
HP-Compaq becomes the largest PC maker with a 19% share compared to Dell's 13%.
HP-Compaq remains the largest Server with 37% of the market compared to Dell's 18%.
Combined sales would be almost 90 billion dollars.
About 150,000 employees.

I guess an IBM-Dell merger is next.

Compaq sold its Alpha division to Intel a while back.

Intel will begin channeling some Alpha technology and engineering talent toward its recently introduced line of Itanium processors, and Compaq will turn exclusively to the Intel chip to power its servers--paring down expenses, consolidating its product lines, and beginning a shift to software and services. The Alpha will be no more by 2004.

I don't think the purchase will make a large difference one way or the other. The personal computers both companies now make are aimed at the stagnant, some would say saturated, consumer market. Neither has done a good job of turning a profit in the consumer pc market. Dell will not be threatened by the merger since they have adopted a superior sales/marketing/construction model. On the other hand, HP has a very solid reputation in the printer (and related office equipment) market. Both do a great job with high end servers. I suspect that the company most jeopardized by the combination is Sun Microsystems. IBM might be threatened a little as well. In the long run, as with nearly all such consolidations, it will mean higher prices and fewer choices for consumers.

Gateway last month reported a second quarter pretax loss of about $9 million, or 2 cents a share, and said it saw no imminent rebound for the U.S. consumer PC market. Earlier this month it said it plans to shut operations in Britain and Ireland, eliminating more than 1,000 jobs.

Everybody's bleeding. Gateway's overhead (their stores) will continue to hurt them...keep an eye out, Gateway will be prime merger fodder. Also mentioned in the quoted article; S&P dropped Gateway stock to junk status. Neat. What a time for a career change *sigh.*

They didn't sell it to Intel. They licensed it to Intel. A pretty hefty difference. Compaq still does quite a bit in their high-end line with Alpha Server. The Alpha chip is a 64-bit chip. Since the Itanium was helped in the development by HP. Alpha will probably be phased out sooner than 2004.
