Power Over Wireless

Hi Im new here,

Im just wondering if anyone as heard of 'Power Over Wireless' the transfer of electricity to things such as cell phones without a cable. It works similar to the electric toothbrush!!!

Anyone heard of it??

I believe most of these so callled wireless power schemes make use of inductive coupling, which allows power transfor from inductor coil to another that a separated by some distance when they are excited to their resonance frequencies. Wikipedia has decent description of different types of wireless power if you want to learn a bit more. If you are really interested though, start reading some of the old papers by Nikola Tesla. The guy was a genius of his time, simply fascinating work.

It's not much different from how a transformer transfers energy from one winding to another using magnetic flux. Same physical principle, different application.

It also has a name WiTricity, pretty cool concept when they make it safe

I saw this article last night on sciam.com. A great step forward using technology that is close to 100 years old. The biggest challenge will be miniaturizing the coils while still being able to obtain sufficient enough power transfer between them.
