Let me start off by saying that - yes - this is AMD vs. Intel - but in the most productive way possible - what is most friendly for our wallets?

Since the Core 2 Duos came along, we've been singing the praises of Intel's newest processor line, and have encouraged new builders towards them just as, six months ago, we were encouraging them towards Athlon X2s as the processors offering the best performance for the money.

The Core 2 Duos were outperforming AMDs offerings on a price for price basis, but while the market has been snapping them up, AMD has been - quietly, I think - slashing prices in an effort to compete:

Reading this article made me wonder, so I took myself off to Newegg for a bit of comparison work. Right now, the majority of you lot can buy the AMD AM2 5600+ Windsor processor for $189! That's virtually the same price as the Intel E6300, and getting on for half the price of the E6600.

Now, I'm not a big fan of the AM2 platform. But on a performance / price basis - which is surely what the AMD - Intel debate SHOULD be about, these figures have certainly made me think again. Until the Core 2 Duo price drop, of course!

This will be the typical scenario. When Intel outperforms an AMD, AMD users cry "bang for the buck", but when an AMD processor outperforms an Intel, price is no object, it's clearly a better processor... funny how AMD users will pay $1000 for a newly released processor that outperforms an Intel (and yes, there are many threads about people here that purchased the top of the line FX's on release at that price), yet when Intel releases a processor that is clearly a winner, $1000 is now ridiculous, price gouging, etc.

Hal, I posted this thread purely for information purposes for our new builders. I felt that the AMD price drops haven't been given nearly as much press as the forthcoming Core 2 Duo price drops on the forums. That 5600+ looks like VERY good value to me at the moment.

If you feel that it should close to discussion then I am fine with that.

I'm not closing it right now, just giving the forsight of what always happens here with these threads. If things start heading down the ugly path, that's when the closure will need to happen.

Well from my observation i would have to say that AMD has been MAJORLY slashing prices but only in the past month or so. But even so the best amd i see which is a Athlon x2 6000+ at 3.0 ghz it is over 250 dollers. And it still doesnt beat the 250 doller or even one cheaper of the C2D line.

Dont get me wrong i like and own amd. But right now Intel is still the better bang for the buck.

I have always been an AMD fan and planned to build my new system on AMD and AM2 socket, but seeing C2D being better bang for buck and soon to have further price drops on them, I am fast rethinking my proposed build!

AMDs still are not bad at all by any means...a good amd cpu most users will never actually notice the difference between them and the c2d.

but i mean you might as well future proof right?...

And the problem with AMD is they are STUPID and not really releaseing and info on their quad core line. No one knows for a FACT if their quad core will be backwards compatible with the AM2 Socket.

Im hoping it is but doubting it will be so. At the same time even if it is then the cpu will bottleneck anyways so its kind of pointless.

AMD's share price is so low right now that it could be taken private. If taken private they no longer have to worry about the shareholders and the boards demands. This makes for a much more flexible company. AMD has slashed prices in order to get chips out the door according to this article.

AMD is a further ahead than what many seem to be thinking according to this comparison between AMD's fastest and Intel's fastest.

Yes this article is an AMD/Intel comparison....but it is level headed, based on facts and not a shouting match or an argument as to who is better. I just think many will find it interesting without taking this thread in the wrong direction.
