Your Specialty

[Disgrace]

Is there any field within the PC or perhaps with other PC-related hardware/software where your knowledge is best applied? I thought it would be interesting if people posted their specialty!

I did some searching and couldn't find another thread of this type.

Unfortunately I don't have much of a specialty but I know a thing or 2 about Windows ME and some other general bits and bobs which are greatly being increased by this forum!

I specialize in web development and general technology.

At work, I'm a PHP/MySQL application developer. With my personal business, I am a consultant, technician, and networking guy. Web stuff is probably my forte, but I do like to study and work with broad ranges of technology as much as I can.

Title at work is Database Administrator, which is a big part of what I do but not all. Off work I do web development, hosting, setup networks, fix computers, answer stupid questions, etc.

I work as a tech monkey at a local business... networking, troubleshooting... for the most part, I just fix little problems that invariably come up when computer illiterate people are placed in front of computers

I also do a little web design...

i work in the mortgage biz.
to alleviate the stress from that i fix computers and do upgrades.
in fact i just received a mac and a desktop.....

I'm the new guy on the block, but not new to computers. I've had them all over the years, starting with my first one in 1977... Didn't have monitor capacity - everything was punch card and key pad input. They now sell wrist watches with a million times more power than that one.

I seem to be good at cracking code, and figuring out puzzles - like when something seems impossible but I end up figuring it out somehow. I've got a lot of hours writing code, but that is all old school and no longer applicable to today. At least I understand the concept... I've worked with Fortran, CABAL, Basic, DOS, etc. Haven't had the time to catch up with visual basic, Linux or some of the other new stuff.

Mainly, outside of being a good reader and a reasonable investigator that has built almost all of my own computers for 2 decades now, I'm good at Microsoft Word, making it do page numbers, and formatting in ways that it doesn't really like. (And no, I'll not write macros for you... thanks.

I also do a lot of car work -- I was an ASE certified master tech - and I can handle most everything up to and including setting up axles, transmission and motor rebuild, and suspension design. Our family hobby is radical off-road 4x4 stuff - rock crawling, etc.

Other stuff I'm good at? Electrical work - up to 480 systems, welding and fabrication, general maintenance, oh, and reading... I read 3-5 books a week, and have since 1967 (yup, I'm an old dude).

That, and my current profession is as an ordained Pastor, so I also do family and spiritual counseling, plus I work to start new churches.

In all seriousness, I'm currently still in schoool working on my PhD in Electrical Engineering focusing on micro/nanotechnology.

Not really sure what I'm good at yet, but when it comes to computers and technology I enjoy pretty much all fields (although with some bias towards hardware and networking).

Maybe some day I'll get a real job too.

I like working with hardware. Software can't be jerry-rigged. And working with my hands is more enjoyable. We all enjoyed building our computers more than we did activating XP...Or at least I hope so.

im mianly best at ASP/MCACCESS dynamic websites and generally more software issues. I am new to hardware despite an computing degree, so learning from here and building and repairing computers now for first time and enjoying it. i work in secured loan industry so deal with finance on day to day basis am ok with networks and database management and creation.

Electronics that float. If its electrical and it goes on a boat then have probably had to mess with it at some time. I have skippered a research vessel for 16 years now and have installed and maintained oceanographic sampling equipment and marine electronics which at times can be pretty high maintenance. I have four computers on board used for seeing the data in real time, data logging and navigation. The computers run the software which runs a number of instruments and sampling devices such as a bottom tracking current profiler Doppler, a flow through system which measures various qualities of the water, a carousel which is used to take water samples at different depths and a conducting cable winch which sends data up a special cable which has insulated wires internally. Most of the marine electronics are integrated using NMEA0183 which is a type of ASCII basically. Some of the newer electronics are using ethernet to communicate. All the info generated by the marine electronics, weather station and oceanographic equipment can be logged. Plus the boat has internet access underway, built for the local ferry system, which can feed back collected data to shore so that scientists can see this data in near real time from their office. I also teach undergraduate and grad students for the university that I work for.

Jack of all trades.... I've done computer work for many years, everything from building grunt to network admin for a dozen or so insurance companies around town. Jobs of the past include everything from pumping gas to steel work. Currently in the credit card game as a customer service and top sales rep... who knows, mebbe tomorrow will bring something different.

I pride myself in being able to find almost anything on the internet. I can usual find any needle in a haystack.

I like fixing computers. I most like taking old machines that have slowed down and get them back up to speed or even better.

I am the same as EzyStvy. Jack of all, master of none. I do a lot on computers...marketing, graphic design, photo editing, games, recording...

I want to get into some more software stuff like writing code and designing programs...but I don't. Basically I want to know it but not learn it I'll get there some day.

Oh, and if there is a game that has a mapmaking utility, chances are I have made a map. None of these new ones come close to JED, the tool for the old Jedi Knight maps, but ah well.

This site was my real dip into hardware knowledge, and I am loving it. Learning more and more every day! Matter of fact, in the past week I have purchased 3 computer mags and read 'em all cover to cover. CPU is my fav so far.

heavy duty / commercial transport mechanics .

I can usually make a computer run that couldn't (because i did that to my own so many times) and get it to run as fast as it should . aside from that i can follow directions and the wisdom of others .

hey david M what does your boat look like ? i have been interested for some time .
