Cooling "beverages" as quickly as possible!

Ok so I'm having a party tonight, and I want to cool my "beverages" as quickly as possible. Will they actully cool faster in the freezer than in the fridge?

Talk to Mythbusters! Appears that a mixture of ice, water and salt is your fastest method.

I usually toss a few liquor bottles in the freezer, but that's meant for gradual cooling.

I think that a bucket or tub of ice would be best.

Liquid nitrogen works VERY well. Basically, the greater the temperature difference there is between the inside and outside of the container AND the greater the thermal conductivity is of the medium that the container is placed into, then the faster the beverages will cool down. At the same temperature, water will cool something down 24 times faster than air. The third variable is the insulative properties of the container itself.

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/th...ity-d_429.html

Given that, the most practical way is what some are already saying. Put the beverage containers in a medium that has a high rate of conductivity, (water) and cool the water down with ice. If you want to get real fancy, you can add salt, which lowers waters freezing point below 0 degrees centigrade...since the ice in you're fridge is already below 0 degrees.

Fill the cooler with the beverages, then pour ice over the top commensurate with the size of the cooler. Then a bucket of cold water. Your "beverages" will be quite cold in about 15 minutes. A second bag of ice after the water will keep it cold.

Super chilled water that is moving to keep it from freezing works REALLY well. You may notice at higher end grocery stores, they have wine chillers that work like that. They chill a bottle of wine in a hurry.

This is obviously pretty difficult to set up at home, but a cooler with an ice-water mixture would be your best bet.

lol, there's always the geeky way of using peltier coolers. And when you're done, you can slap it into a PC!

That seems to be the most practical way... I imagine the salt water lowers the freezing point of the water so it can be cooled below 32F (without freezing). I would think the water cools faster than ice because the water has 100% contact with the surface of the can.

Just drink the "beverages" before they have a chance to get warm...

That's exactly the reason. With just ice, you have gaps of air which actually in a way acts as an insulator. Put in the water and increase the contact area, add the salt and allow for a yet lower temp with the water as you keep it from freezing. If you could possibly get ice that would perfectly fit around the container, with no gaps, that would essentially be the same thing.

Hmm...now there's an idea. Mold some ice chunks to fit cans/bottles to put in your freezer (or cooler)...but since it'd be difficult to get a perfect fit you could cheat and make the inside of the mold a bit wet before you put the can in.

lol, glad to see that I'm not the only one making typos.

Instead of "coolers", I originally typed out "collars". Why are we all having trouble with the same word?

Haha, this turned into an interesting thread. Thanks for all the help! Btw, the "beverages" we fantastic last night. I couldn't find salt so I used 2 bags of ice and some water. Cooled them up in about 40 mins or so. Was a nice night.

Thanks everyone!
