Smile Farewell for now

Over five years ago I stumbled upon PC Mech when I was looking for some information on a new Compaq I had just bought (hey, I was ignorant! ) I knew a bit about computers but I had stopped fiddling with them when I was around 9 or 10 and hadn't really come back to them again. What I found here was a community of wonderful knowledgeable people that answered everybody's questions and encouraged people to get to know the innards of the machines they were surfing on. I can honestly say that without PC Mech and the knowledge that glc, Hal, Cricket, mbossman, Force Flow, Statica, mairving, and lots of other people have given me, I would not have been able to get a job in IT and help all of my users.

I've enjoyed the past few years working on computers, but it is now time for another change. In a few short weeks I will be moving to Boston to start law school at Boston University. No more will I be working on computers from the IT side of things; I'll be just another user. Sadly, I'll probably not be able to be a part of this community like I once was, although maybe I'll check in from time to time.

I do want to thank everybody for making this the best computer site on the internet, and for being the best-run forum of any type at all that I have ever come across. Everybody here deserves a lot of credit for making this such a respectful and welcoming place.

I'll hopefully see you around!

Doc grab the DVD of Paper Chase and go in prepared.
Most assuredly, don't forget to put "Groklaw" in your bookmarks : http://www.groklaw.net/index.php

Lewis Mettler over LamLaw : http://www.lamlaw.com/tiki-index.php made the change before you and he's more then willing to share.

Don't be a stranger and PJ runs a home for orphaned computer types in Law School.

Best of luck to you doctorgonzo! Do you have an idea as to which area of law you're thinking of going into?

I'm not sure exactly. I am interested in the tech field obviously, and issues like data security and data privacy are fascinating (not to mention increasingly important). However, most people who have gone through law school with an idea of what kind of law they want to get into end up doing something different. I'm planning on keeping an open mind and seeing what I find to be most interesting.

I know all about Boston drivers. I was there a month ago to find an apartment and they definitely are crazy! Fortunately, I won't have to deal with driving there. My apartment is just a couple blocks from the T so I am selling my car and going without a vehicle while I am in school. It seems a lot easier.

And it will be a lot less hastle, I use to drive the wife up to Beth Israel Hospital 3 times a week, after surgery and man it was a nightmare to say the least.. Parking was always the most costly, that was when you could find a place to park..

DrG, it's folks like you as well as those you mention that have made PC Mech more than an info center, it's a community of people with a common interest. Your departure will be like having an empty apartment above the hardware store. That'll always be "Gonzo's place". We'll miss ya man! Best of luck and Godspeed on your journey to success.

Good Luck doctorgonzo! My time here has also become less and less over the years and I know all too well how time consuming graduate/professional school can be. Take care, and hope to see you around.

That's for sure. My cousin went all the way through law school, aiming to be a lawyer the whole way. Then, when she finally got through it and passed the exam, she just up and decided "Hey, I wanta be a CPA!" And that's what she's doing today (very successfully, I might add).

As for you leaving though, like's already been said, you'll be missed. I've gotten quite used to seeing your avatar around here.....it's going to seem weird not seeing it so much. But hey, I wish you the best of luck in those future endeavors you've got planned. Drop in when you can.

Speaking as a MA evacuee....

You may want to talk to your insurance company about the car if you think there is any chance of you eventually wanting a car. Mind you parking in Boston is a part time job so not having one for that reason is sane. MA has some strange Insurance laws and lots of companies are NOT writing new policies there (plus there is a lot of accidents and insurance fraud) but do allow grandfathering... possibly you ccould keep the car here in MN insured minimally then when needed take it with as they say here...

As to driving- well... my wife never wanted to drive and kept extending learner permits but never practising enough to take the drving test. We left TX to MA and in TX the permit is a license but with a restriction like if you have to wear glasses. We went into the RMV to get a MA permit and they refused since she already had a license. We left - got the TX driving booklet and went to another RMV, after elevating to managment and repeated "you do not uderstands" I tried the tactic of "OK fine give her the license, she has never taken a driving test but heck if you refuse to give her a permit go ahead" that made them think a small momment but just a moment. She got the license and has never taken a driving test. Splains a lot Lucy!!

Best of Luck....
