I'm trying to download some shareware from zdnet, cnet,etc...,the regular window "File Download" doesn't show up, and all I get is a blank page with URL
ending -.exe . I also noticed that one shareware with zip files worked. Also, if I right-click "Save As" on the link under "All Download Sites", the "File Download" window shows-up. Does anyone know what is the problem here ??? Thanks for help! Zal |

Assuming you are using internet explorer, try going to Tools / Internet options / Advanced and click on restore defaults, see if that helps.

OK, next thing I would try is go to Control Panel / Add/Remove programs select Internet Explorer and Tools select Add/Remove choose Repair Internet Explorer.

Hi Courto,
I did it and still the same. On Saturday while browsing I was alerted by my Norton AV for Nimda Virus.I tried to delete the file, it didn't work.I tried to quarantine it, didn't work. I was running out of options, when all of a sudden Norton managed to repair the file. After that I scanned the whole computer and nothing was found. Maybe it has something to do with the problem. I'll try to upgrade my IE 5.5 to the new one, #6.0 I hope this will fix the problem. What else can I do ? I wonder, is it IE related or is it OS/Windows ? I also used the IE Repair Tool. Thanks, Zal |

I would download a Nimda repair tool and see what it finds on your computer.

Thank you guys,
I did what glc suggested, downloaded the Nimda Repair Tool. Still, nothing. BTW, the "File Download" box appeared in this case. What else to do ? I'll try to disable Norton AV. Zal |

zal,
I don't think Norton AV is your problem. If you read the stuff at the link I provided in my previous post, you might find some information there that will sort things out. |

I actually posted about a similiar problem here and tried everything and couldn't come up with a solution. I finally had to fdisk and reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows. That was after two weeks of no luck including friends who were techs.

zal,
The File Download Dialog box is appearing for some file types and not for others? Is that correct? Perhaps you inadvertantly cleared the "Always Ask Before Opening This Type Of File" checkbox for a particular fiel type? If so, this can be corrected by opening My Computer, click on the View menu and select Options then select File Type. Locate the particular file type that is NOT giving you the File Download Dialog box and select it and then select Edit. Check the Confirm Open After Download box and click OK and OK again. |

Courto,Blankman,glc,
I thank you very much for trying to help me! I have the solution . I was having the blank page right after a message transfering to the download site. On the top left corner was a tiny icon, that turns out belongs to QuickTime. QT has an invalid plugin residing in the registry that blocks downloadin of .exe files in IE 5.5 SP2 and IE6.0 It has to be removed the with Regedit.exe Start-Run-Regedit.exe Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a normal safety precaution. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe The key does not normally exist. Thanks again! |
