ATM Fees

Has anyone really taken a look at how much they spend each month on these? I just recently checked out My bank statement and can say that they have cost me around $300 in one month. That is the fee my bank charges and what the other bank charges.. I have decided to stop getting money from other ATM unless my bank doesn't have one in the area in which I'm shopping ate or what ever.. Never have thought that you could spend that much in fees alone..

I don't have a fee from my bank, and I don't use other banks machines to get money, so I'm Zero on fees. When I shop I get extra cash at checkout time.

$300 in a month? How many times a month do you usually visit the ATM?

Last time I actually did have to check for fees, it was about $1.50 a transaction.

The only time I use an ATM is usually at my own bank after ours for deposites or withdrawls. I use my debit card for 99% of my purchases and rarely have more than $20 cash.

I just be sure to use the ATM machines of my own bank and not others, so I never have fees. Most of the machines around here though list a $1.50 charge for their use if you're not that bank's customer.

Looks like you have a couple options:

1) Switch to bank that owns more ATM's in your area that you can use and won't be charged a transaction/service fee.

2) You could always take out more cash at once if you're charged on a per transaction basis (e.g. $2/transaction at a foreign ATM), so you use ATM's less frequently keeping the service charges down.

3) Use your Debit card/personal checks more often for purchases (where it's possible) instead of paying in cash.

One of the reasons I use Bank of America is because they have so many branches around. This of course means that it is relatively easy to find an ATM that is not going to charge fees.

sheesh, $300 is a LOT to pay in fees! Here in the UK, the majority of ATMs remain free regardless of bank - and regardless of the attempt to change this recently which was strongly opposed. The only machines that charge over here are the 'freestanding' ones often found in newsagents, and bars etc, and I don't recall ever using one. Now, I might be a tight-fisted Yorkshireman, but paying £1.50 for my own money? Pah!

I bank with Chase, and they charge me $2.00 for an off-net ATM transaction in addition to whatever fee the bank that owns the machine charges. The way to beat this is to buy something at a store with the debit card and get cash back.

If your a tight-fisted Yorkshireman then I have got to be a tight-fisted Welshman because I refuse pointblank to pay ATM charges, saying that, I bank with Barclays and they have machines everywhere.

When driving over the road fee pilled up because there was never a ATM for my bank any where is site.. Up in conn where we use to live our bank and a network of others would wave the fee for each other customers when using their ATM.. Up there I never had a fee to pay because of it.

Either you were burning through cash at a ridiculous rate and/or you were only taking small amounts out at a time. Neither way is a good way to travel. Use a credit or debit card for every purchase you can and when you need cash, get at least $200 out.

Yeah, very true. It's not just ATM fees, it is your account type. You likely get charged x amount of dollars for every transaction past 30 or something like that.

My bank does not charge any fees for ATM transactions, however, the other banks charge to use their service. Here it is usually 2.50.

I always get cash back because I don't want to pay ATM fees. ATM fees are evil.

or you could buy a candy bar at wal-mart and get what ever you want back, with no fee.

When I travel, the only time I use cash is if the store or restaurant doesn't take plastic or the bill is less than $5 or under their card minimum. When I do hit an offnet ATM, I always get $200 considering it's gonna cost me an extra $4 or so no matter how much I get - I'm not comfortable carrying around more cash than that. I usually do tip with cash instead of putting it on the card, and I won't hesitate to ask the server to go bust a $20 for me so I can leave her/him a tip. I run my card as credit instead of debit when I have a choice because I get points that way.

I run the credit card as much as I can on a trip as well.... I think I carried no more than $100 on me in cash the whole time.

Once again I have to recommend your local credit union.

If I maintain $10k in deposit AND/OR credit accounts, I get free online banking and no ATM fees. It's pretty easy to hit $10k when they hold the mortgage note.
