Video Game Addiction

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070716/...rnet_addiction

Yikes. A couple neglected their two infants b/c they were gaming. They had food but didn't feed their children or take care of their other needs b/c Dungeons and Dragons was apparently more important.

While that is quite possibly the worst set of parents I can think of, I couldn't help but think what I could do with $50,000 worth of computer gear...

Probably neglect my future children. I shouldn't entertain the idea.

Some people shouldn't have children...especially stupid people. $50,000 inheritance spent on computer equipment and a plasma TV...sheesh...nothing put away for their children's education? Moot point now I guess.

I like video games, but I never play games where I play a character and play in a fantasy world. Some people get soo involved in these games that the fantasy character turns into their real life. Comparing this to drug abuse is not soo far fetched. If a video game takes over two hours for me to play, I force myself to stop. My girlfriend would also take a hammer to my computer if I was on it too much

That, my friend, is why I don't do RPGs. I prefer to launch RPGs at an opponent in an FPS.

As much as I would love to blow $50K on toys and goodies, there's much better use for it.

Video Game Addiction is being used as an excuse to avoid something that you didn't want to do, in this case take care of your kids. Certainly much easier to be a strong hero/heroine that can go out and slay all kinds of beasts than to be a mom or dad that can change a dirty diaper, give your kid a meal or just hold your kid.

That's just sad...

I suppose you could spend a *small* portion on some electronic goodies, but gee...

I actually just now read the article, this is beyond addiction bring the problem that is far more deeply rooted than video games. A childs hair matted with cat urine, a two year old with muscle deterioration.... sounds like these problems were over several weeks at least.. they obviously never even looked at their kids.

These two are in dire need of being involuntarily removed from the gene pool.

Yeah, I'd agree. But if I had 50k, and it had to be spent on that...hot dang.

Thats just sad...

If they didnt want to take care of their children they never should have had any...period

Some people just havent any bussiness having kids but for some reason they do...Just the other day a few miles from my house a guys brings in a 2 year old boy to the hospital and tells the doctors the boy fell down the steps...

The doctors knew more went on than that and called CPS...appearently the kid was whining and wouldnt shut up so the older man ruffed him up abit...This was the MOM's boyfriend...

The child sadly died the next day from his head injuries...

The thing that bothers me most is that I have children this age and I look over at them and I cant help but wonder how or why? seriously what kind of person would lash out against a helpless child...the child was probably just hungry, thirsty or tired...but the adult here coulcnt be bothered with the trivial whatnots of the child...

You know I will be the 1st to admit there are times when I am doing something like working on the cars or doing repairs in the house and the kids are all clinging to me trying to help and asking 500 question and I usually only make it to 100 of those before I get good and ggrevated but I would never lash out....I just simply say...hey go outside and ride you bike or go bug your mother....

I could sit here half a day and tell you guys stories of children that died or came close from abuse just short minutes from here...it happens all to often...

No kidding...I highly doubt it is just games that caused this. It is waaay deeper than that. Kinda like what HAL said, but seriously, there is an issue here that far surpasses what the article says.

Anti-gaming advocates will always latch onto stories like these and put a spin on them. But, as it always turns out, there are issues deeper than just gaming, as evidenced by what Hal pointed out.

One always has to examine the true cause and effect in situations like this.
