A Network Riddle

I had to hook up a Sonicwall device to a guys computer to establish a VPN tunnel. Shouldn't really be that much problem. However, anytime I would hook the device up to the modem and unplug the modem I still couldn't get an IP address from the modem. I tried hooking up two other computers and had the same problem. One computer, the original one that was hooked up directly worked fine. After a call in to Comcast tech support I quickly had my answer.

So what do you think the answer was?

You weren't recycling the modem power to release the MAC.

Well as it turned out I thought that I was. I unplugged the modem and plugged it back in. After talking to Comcast support I was told that the modem since it was also hooked up to Vonage for voice had a battery backup so that unplugging it didn't reset it. Comcast support sent a signal to reset it or I could have disconnected the battery and unplugged it.

I'll have to remember that one.
