$999 a pop at first? Oh well, that's the price to pay for cutting edge technology.

Wow, 45 nm? We're gonna have high powered chips that don't heat your whole gorram room (which is a factor here in the desert heat) that will be faster than greased lightnin! Woo hoo!

And don't worry about the price, in a year it'll be all affordable....

Yeah, the quad cores are set to drop to $266 soon. I remember when they were $1000 not all that long ago.

I always found it amazing how fast the prices drop, which is a good thing, naturally - -- keep cranking out the new ones!!

edit: ever see the TV commercial on the gum where "the flavor lasts too long" ?? I think of that some times in relationship to CPUs. There are already bargain bin dual cores, and soon to be quad cores, too. How many folks are going to want / need a octo core when quad cores are bargain bin? There'd have to be some mighty impressive software out there that uses all those cores...

Isn't it usually the case that the software has to catch up to the hardware?

Incredible. That and a 12MB level two cache - should be fast enough for most things I do!

What can you get that's valuable for $10 on eBay nowadays?

Plenty... I don't think it was quite as low as $10, but bailey got one heck of a deal on some electronic part not long ago.

Also, value depends on what the object is worth to the buyer and seller. To the buyer, it might be a million dollar find, to the seller, absolute junk.

Basically what I meant by that is, by the time I need something faster and better than what I currently own (sig) that new cpu would be a antique and won't cost more than $10. In other words I can't see me upgrading say for another 20+yrs
