My move

Boy is this going to be a nightmare.. First off were getting an apartment with out things we saw in the apartment we were suppose to get.. There is not closet in the master bedroom, and no fire place.. This place is a lot smaller than what we saw as well, and it is going to cost me $785 a month.. Sure it is $500 cheaper than were paying now, and the electric bill should be a whole lot cheaper, but come on we were duped period.. Not to mention were not going to have internet or cable TV until next Friday, and were moving today. Looks like we have to watch one of the 80+ dvds we currently own.. Most of my stuff that could have fit into the apartment we saw (a month ago) now will have to be put in storage, until we can save up for a house or sell.. I hope I wake up and this is all a dream... O ya and the Uhaul I rented is a real piece of work.. It smell like burning oil, and the speed odometer doesn't even work... Heck my dog can run faster than this can move...

I feel for you man. If you have a floor plan or description of the apartment, this could be grounds for breaking the lease. What you can do is look for another place and in the meantime demand that they offer you an apartment which matches that which you were shown.

$785? A decent 2 bedroom apartment in these neck of the woods costs double that, and even family on-campus housing is costing us a few hundred more than this. Still, that really sucks. I hope it all works out in the end and you get what you wanted and that the management of the property get what they deserve.

$785 is insane... before I bought my house, I was paying $715 for a three bedroom townhouse... I now pay less than that for my mortgage and taxes... although housing pricing is going stupid here, my house has more than doubled in value since I bought it 4 years ago.

Around here, $785 won't get you anything where the neighbors speak English. That's one reason why I'm in the process of moving to Joplin, MO. I'm retiring and can't afford to stay here.

Glc, you're moving? How much downtime do you expect in re: to online functions?

You gonna fix comps down there?

Tim, I'm essentially retired now. There will be downtime simply because I'm busy getting the move done, I now have access in both locations. I'm impressed with AT&T - they had me a phone and DSL in less than 24 hours.

well you all could move to rual Oklahoma, you can get a 3 Bedroom that is about 1200 sq feet, that has front yard and back yard for like $350 a month, although you live an hour away from Tulsa or Oklahoma City. But only 30 minutes away from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

GLC - What made you decide on Joplin, MO?

I was born and raised there.

I am currently living in Overland Park, KS, which is about 2 hours north of Joplin.

My family still lives in Joplin, well about 3 - 5 miles east of Joplin.

My ex-GF's 2 daughters live there and they convinced me to move there. They want to keep an eye on me. They both have houses across the street from each other and I bought one about 6 blocks away. Can't beat $84,900 for a house and $340 a year in taxes either, the same place would be 250k here with 5k in taxes.

Where abouts did you buy your house?

In other words, what part of town?

So out of curiosity George... what does $84,900 get you for a house there... I'm just kinda curious as our housing market is going stupid... I paid $89,900 for 820sq ft on the main floor, basement finished, air, heated garage, 2 rooms up one down... and in just 4 years, our house is about $195,000 now.

Kasturi, I'm on North Jackson between E and F, just a couple of blocks from Snob Hill. This is the northwest part of the original city.

Dave, it got me a 50 year old brick ranch with a fresh rehab, 1000 sq ft on the main floor, 2br, 1 bath (new shower/tub insert, sink, and toilet), living room, eat-in kitchen, hardwood floors, new furnace, new central air, new water heater, new range, new dishwasher, new kitchen cabinets, counters, and tile; it's on the side of a hill with a concrete driveway in back off a gravel alley, a semi-finished drive-in full basement (garage door opens right into the basement), a finished room in the corner of the basement that could be a 3rd bedroom, and a rear deck over the driveway that also serves as a carport. Only repair I've had to do is a new sewer line which cost me $2700. Lot is 50x129 feet. Check your PM's.

That's a nice looking place at a reasonable price.... a house like that here would be in the $200K range as well.

Not from PC Mech, right? How long do you think you'll be in downtime from PC Mech Admin duties?

Statica has admin powers and handles things when I'm not available. I do have DSL in both locations now and use my laptop in MO until I move the computers out of here, they will be on one of the last loads. I haven't wired the new place for phone, cable, and CAT 5 yet, all I have is a single phone outlet and a wireless router for now. I'm doing the move with my pickup and a borrowed 8 foot trailer, not everything at once. I'm not routinely patrolling the forums like I used to anyway but I do what's necessary.

Is that going to be the norm for now on or will you resume your previous level of activity? Or has the great guru truly gone into retirement from PC Mech, too? Or semi-retirement?

Finally moved in after 4 days of hell.. Thanks to Uhaul not given us the truck for more than 14 hrs. We started the move a 5pm and finished what we could with it a 5am.. We had to use a friends truck to finish moving the rest of the stuff we didn't have time to put in the uhaul.. What do you expect with only me, the wife, and two kids, plus a boy friend doing all of the moving.. Sunday night I slept 4 hrs, then went to work, after that continued to move and clean up the old place. I was up 28 hrs before going to bed again for about 2 hrs before going back to work for another 14 hrs.. This is the worst and longest move we ever had.. Going from 1500sqf with a 2 car garage to a 1100 and no garage was a big down grade. But it was what we could afford considering my job hasn't been doing so good.. Now were still unpacking and getting rid of things we don't need. We already either gave or throw away things we weren't able to fit in this place.. Hopefully in a yr or two we can get things in order (money wise) and buy another house.. GLC good for you on the new home purchase, I know you will enjoy it.. I have been through Joplin many times when I was traveling over the road.. I'm thinking of going back over with the wife when the youngest is out of the house in two yrs..
