I would actually be interested to hear Lawyerron's opinion of this. Just briefly looking at the "item" for sale and the disclaimer that high bidder has entered a legally binding contract, would somebody (if it were to go to court), actually be expected to pay this guy airfare and accomodations to "receive" the "item" for sale.

To answer your question, such contracts are unenforceable as being against "public policy". Generally speaking, you cannot "consent" to having an illegal act, i.e., assault/battery etc., commited against you.

Those expenses are essential terms of the contract, or more precisely "conditions", thus if the contract is held to be unenforceable, as it surely would here, that would excuse performance of said conditions.
