Windows Issue (automotive power window)

2005 Nissan Xterra

Power Window issue. – The driver’s door window that gets used a lot more than the other windows is acting up.

The window will always go down but it won’t always go up. I have to repeatedly yank on the switch and it will eventually go up. Sometimes when it’s going up, it does so in a jerky motion.
The switch has gotten wet a few times over the past two years due to having the window “cracked open” during rain storms..

I’m guessing the switch is bad but am wondering if others think it might be the motor…

Is the car still in warranty, or has it exceeded the mileage quota?

Sounds like a switch issue. If it were a motor issue, then you should be seeing signs of that going down as well. If it were a wiring issue, pulling up on the switch would make no difference. It sounds like by pulling up, you are increasing the contact force there by making a better connection.

sounds like a bad switch , or crappy connection . try punching the door panel right at the switch .

or buy a new switch , or take the switch out and just run a little jumper wire were the switch was . this way if it works like its brand new you know its the switch and you can go out and buy a switch and know thats what it is .

Almost all warranties these days are at least 3 years/36,000 miles. According to http://www.nissanusa.com/owning/faqs/warranty.html, that's how long Nissan ones are, in particular.

You are so correct...I still have 12 months and 12,000 miles left on the warranty..

The fun part will be getting it to act up when I take it in...

Yesterday driving home from work in 98°F /high humidity weather, it acted up.
This morning driving into work in much cooler weather it worked fine.

[note to self - take it in, in the late afternoon]

Take it in anyway, and whether or not you can get it to act up, you'll have reported the problem during the warranty period and thus will be more likely to get it fixed even if the problem drags out to beyond the warranty period.
