Was it a good deal at least?

I don't think I every could by a 17" laptop, just too big but I worked on a Latitude D430 and it seemed pretty nice. I love the 12" and 13" laptops.

Enjoy your new lappy.

I didn't buy a Dell, but I bought a Mac Mini (soon to be upgraded or done away with probably, I was impulsive all the way) and a 19" lcd. Both discounted, both completely unnecessary. Hope yours at least has a good purpose.

Enjoy the new toy (or workhorse, depending).

Michael Dell, being back at the helm, is obviously listening to his customers as opposed to the last guy at the helm.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice the bottom line a little in order to retain the loyalty...and in doing so, you do better for the whole.

actuaally there is two reasons that I chose to buy the dell.
1. is by the quality and support I have seen from others in the past.

2. is I did not want anything to do with vista yet, and dell will still sell with xp pro if you wanted it.
but the 2500 dollar price tag is a real pinch for me, but the 17" wide screen will be nice.

shipping date is about aug 14, so I should have it soon.

well today I canceled that order.
I was sent a e-mail from them stating that there would be a delay on the shipment.

I also spent some time browsing the dell forum and read many post on the same model I had ordered, and many were complaining about the delays. it seams that dell is unable to aquire all the parts necessary to build that model.
so I canceled my order.

next question I have is
would MS office 2000 run with vista ?

I am concerned that a lot of the software I have may not run on vista.

I was thinking about a Macbook actually, considering my Dell laptop is a smoking pile of junk.

It ought to. It's becoming hard to find software that doesn't run on Vista.

If you are looking for a 17 inch notebook with XP, go to the small business side of the Dell site and check out the Precision M90.

I have decided that it don't have to be a 17", any laptop with XP pro will do just fine.

I am just afraid to get one with vista, because of my large collection of software that may not run on vista, I have a lot of software that I use in radio and electronics design that may not run on vista, and I am not wanting to take the chance of being unhappy with that.

right.
after I got the varification that the first order was in fact canceled, I ordered that one with 2 gig ram, 160 gig hard drive, and XP-pro.

I also call dell as to why there was a delay and they told me they were behind on getting the cpu's for it.
anyway if all goes well on this one, ship date is Aug,27th and half the price too.

for future reference, whenever shopping for a dell always look for the link on the left side of the screen that says "smart values", they have their best deals there.

see below

http://www.dell.com/content/topics/t...bsd&~ck=anavml

there's a laptop on that screen with an AMD X2 CPU, 1 GB of ram, a dvd burner, and you can choose XP or vista, for only $499. What an awesome deal.

Id buy a Dell laptop in a heartbeat, they make some very good machines. As far as desktops go...anything under $1000 Id buy a Dell, but over that price, I think I can do better building my own .

I agree.. I needed a budget machine and no way could I build one as cheap as what I got with a Dell... going high perf, then no prob, I'd build.
