Do I have a Cavity?
Today I woke up and one of my molars on my left side hurts. I'm 16 years old, wear a retainer at night, brush my teeth and floss every night. This is how it feels. Anything cold hurts it for a split second, then it does not hurt after that. It's like the tooth has to get used to the cold. If I pres son the tooth from the side, it hurts. It does not hurt if i press on the top of the tooth, just the side. I do have a few other sensitive teeth (bottom front) but this seems different. I also still have my wisdome teeth, they havn't come up yet.
Alright, throw me to the lions...... Is it a cavity? Tom =\

As a fellow retainer-wearer, I'd say it's just soreness. Cavity's generally hurt like crazy.

Temperature sensitivity is quite common and can be corrected by increasing fluoride in your daily dental mechanics. |

It could be anything, could be a cavity, could be a sensitive or exposed nerve, could be a previous filling that has cracked or come loose (had that myself a few years ago after getting a tooth pulled), could be a crack in the tooth itself. Only a dentist will know for sure.

You would ask a bunch of remote strangers on an Internet forum if you have a cavity?
I'd say, yeah, but maybe not in your tooth ....

Is the pain right where the gum meets the exposed area of the tooth?

Yes tom thats EXCATLY where it hurts. The gum is somewhat inflamed there too. If it lasts much longer I'll take a trip to the doctor.
And yes Xena I let my PCMech family know whats going on in my life, especially if it hurts! PCMech is the best =] |

Get a very soft toothbrush, take a swig of Listerine, and brush your teeth with it.

Get to the dentist. The problem cannot be diagnosed by a bunch of computer geeks on an internet forum.

If my teeth help me chew my food, then they work just fine for me =]
And yes telling people about things that worry you, it DOES make you feel better. So thanks everybody =] |

Can you say ROOT CANNEL? (which really aren't that bad - only expensive)
If it is a cavity and you let it go too long you'll end up needing a root cannel....

Root Cannel - approx $750.00
Most of the time you replace the tooth that was killed by the root cannel with a crown. (another $750.00) If it still hurts on Monday, go to the dentist. |

The idea here is to not have to get to the point of doing a root cannel and crown.
"IF" you have a cavity and you let it expose the roots/nerves in your tooth for too long you Will have to do these expensive options. |

Alright I just stuck a mirror in my mouth and looked at the mottom of my teeth. There is nothign on the bottom (crown?) of my tooth in pain and the tooth looks white and perfect on the side. I have also just noticed that I have sealant on this tooth. Now I'm very confused becuase sealant makes it VERY hard for you to get a cavity. You almost need to try lol. So anyways I'll see how it feels on monday and then give the dentist a call.
