I truly think my family is just stupid....

My mom has boughten 3 PC's in the last 4 days......

my brother doesn't install the drivers for a wireless usb network thing. He tells my mom the computer is busted, and wont' work. She takes him to Circuit City an d buys him a brand new HP.

I install the drivers and fix the PC.

My other brother says his laptop is dieing...his hard drive died a while ago, so he buys a new one, and gets ripped off from Circuit city insteaad of buying from newegg and letting me install it. He then says its broken, my mom goes and buys him a brand new HP before I even have a chance to look at it.

The old PC that I fixed with the driver issue then was going to be used for, yes, yet again, my OTHER brother who is 5 for his little learning games. My mom (who knows nothing about computrs) then can't get the sound to work. Windows says it cant find the audio drivers or something, I did'nt have enough time to fix it because I was busy, so I just went down to install the audio drivers, and there, another brand new HP computer from Circuit City...now this one has vista, and she hit sleep mode, and starts freaking out that she broke the monitor ¬_¬

Wasted money on 3 brand new PC's when I could have fixed them all... and i work for circuit city and she coudln't even wait for me to work so i could get the sales for them...

Nevermind the stupidity....talk about instant gratification. Do you at least get to keep the old pc's, fix them up, and then sell them for a profit?

What's wrong with a Celeron-D? It has enough computing power for 95% of the computer users out there.........it's as strong as MY computer sitting right here.........

I agree.. I just picked up a Celeron D system a few months ago... it has easily as much grunt as my P4 2.4.

I am not getting the 'install drivers for the wireless usb network thing'. Why do you need to install drivers for wireless?

If it'll make ya feel any better, my parents hate bothering me with pc issues so they try things themselves...

Moms first pc (win 3.1) spit out a low disk space warning...She proceeded to find all sorts of folders with all sorts of files and deleted away....

She calls AOL who refers her to Microsoft....Thye give her, her money back for the support call while asking her if she has any family members that can give her the much needed help....

It may have not been very smart but I doubt they are truly "stupid" but like MaxRat said just not "well informed".

I would just be gratefull that you faimly can just go and buy 3 PC's even though it may have not been the best choice. I would just let them know that you are experinced enough to take care of problems and that you would rather them turn to you in future. Plus you can use the Celeron D computer to learn more.

Right. Sometimes when you think family is being stupid, they just aren't reading your mind ....

Maybe they think you don't want to be bothered, or are too busy ....

Just because someone doesn't know much about computers doesn't mean they are stupid. There are plenty of Ivy League grads who know absolutely nothing about computers, but they're obviously extremely smart otherwise.

My younger brother is an electrician. His neighbor managed some billion dollar funds and did quite well with it. Well whenever his fluorescent light went out he would call my brother and show him how to replace the bulb. Just a simple twist is all it took. The dude just couldn't or wouldn't do it. Rather than saying he was an idiot I would say that he was 'focused elsewhere'.

Reminds me of Homer Simpson. He said that he took a home wine making course and forgot how to tie his shoes because he had to shove that out to make room for something else. Some people are apparently like that.

OK, its one of those USB adapters, you plug it into your pc, and it picks up the signals coming off my router (sorry i don't know alot about networking so i don't know the lingo) well if you plug in the usb device BEFORE installing the drivers, it wont' work, if you install the drivers after, it still won't work. The box clearly says that, so i removed the USB device (windows automatically installed it) and then installed the drivers then put the usb device in, and it worked.

When the pc's in my house have problems and (I built them except the 6yr old dell still going strong) and I don't get to them right away, the wife threatens to have a pc guru come in and fix them for us.. That is all it takes for me to get up off my duff and get it done

If you are talking about a DSL/Cable modem then you don't need to install USB drivers for it, just use the cat5 cable.

No, here let me get a photo and the correct name

Here is the USB Network Adapter

Becaues the PC is to far from the router or modem so i cant use the cat5 cable, plus we want it wireless, and it doesn't have an internet wireless card, so you plug this in, and it picks up the wireless internet signal.

That adapter requires drivers to be installed before plugging it in for the first time. It will say so in the instructions - which we all know everybody reads.

I have actually had to read those instructions before...

I just bought a new usb network adapter for my mother's computer, and printed on the packaging bag was a warning to install the drivers first before doing anything else.

Looks like Belkin realized as well that not everyone opens up that instruction book.

Ohhh...the supplied Cat5e cable...now I get it. They do sell longer patch cables if the supplied one is too short...or he could make his own custom length patch cable.

life can truly be more difficult than it need be when everyone you live with is so lacking in even basic computing knowlede. my family cannot really afford to simply purchase a new computer every time they think it's busted, so the situations that i have been in are fairly different. nevertheless, i know how you feel.
