"Normal" vs. "Zombie" sleep schedules

Ok, so it was my grandfather's birthday today. I wanted to be the first one to call him to wish him a happy b-day so I called after I dropped off my wife at the train station.

I called him yesterday at the same time and he was slighty amused. Today, however, he was hysterical. He's getting a huge kick out of me waking up so early (it was 7:00 am when I called).

My hours used to be vampire-like where I'd sleep into the early afternoon and go to bed in the wee early hours of the morning, just because I got more work and reading done at those times.

My new hours are 6:30am until 11:00pm whereas my wife tries to maintain a 5:30-10:30 schedule.

Soooo, I was curious, what are all of your operating hours?

at the moment, my sleep hours are 12 am - 530 am, most of which is broken up by a crying baby. i guess that borders on skimpy traditional sleep patterns.

Well, during the summer I usually got up around 9-9:30 and went to bed around 12:00. Now that school has started, however, I get up around 7:00 and got to bed around 10-10:30.

7:00am to 11:00pm.

I don't need to get up at 7:00 but my dog demands he eats around then.

Next week I start a 8:00 class so 7:00 makes a lot more sense.

i have an odd pattern, if i were to actually go by it. because of work and "normal life" i cant, however. ever since i was a baby i would basically stay awake for 3 days and sleep the 4th. i got out of the habit with school but during the summer, once i get into that pattern, i can continue with no problem. on the 4th day i normally would sleep for 12-16 hours and the 3rd day awake i really start to get physically exhausted. i wish i could do it all the time, i get a lot done in a "day" and i actually feel better compared to a "normal" pattern of sleep every night.

its also weird because if i get 4 hours of sleep a night im more awake and have more energy than if i get any other amount.

my pattern now is about 10am to 1:30am. i work second shift (2:20pm to 11pm).

I get up at 8:00 AM on weekdays for work and go to bed anywhere between 11:30 PM and 1:00 AM. Weekends are sporadic. I often stay up till 4:00 AM and get up at 10:00 AM on weekends.

I just quit my job(summer internship), so I am going to sleep in late tomorrow, but for the summer I was
Work Day:12-2am sleep, 6:30am wake
Weekend:12-2am sleep, 11:30isham wake

School will be a little stranger, since 3 days a week I have a 9am class to start, 1 day a 1:35pm class, and 1 day an 11:45am. Last year I consistently woke up at around 9am and showered, went to breakfast and all that, but by the end of the year I would just roll out of bed 15 minutes before class and go. Now that I'm off campus I may have to resort to my old habits again. Darn.

My dad has been 10:30-5:30 for his working life, 10:30-7 every other day. He started changing it up now that he retired and I still can't get used to seeing him awake past 11:30.

I have been able to get by on four hours sleep a night since I was a baby but now I am getting older I seem to need more sleep.
The maintenance and upgrade work I am doing at the moment for British Telecom has me working all sorts of weird and wonderful hours, I can work days, evenings and nights all in one week. I cannot plan more than three days in advance because I don't know what hours I will be working, at the moment, if I am home and I am tired I go to bed....

In the summer, I get up around 11am-noon and go to bed around midnight-2am (not counting right now, since I'm on vacation). During the school year, I get up about 15 minutes before my first class (last term, either 9am or 1pm) and go to bed between 1am and 2am.

Once a week I have to do a cruise which requires me to get out of bed at 0130 so I can be on the boat by 0300. I get back to the dock usually around noon but feel wiped out the rest of the day. Usually the night before I get hardly any sleep in anticipation of having to get up so early. Running a boat on sleep deprivation is not the easiest thing.

What I read is that the brain protein folds while you are sleeping. This folding is a necessity for the brain to function properly. For some animals like fish, they have the ability to shut down one hemisphere of their brain and function on the other. Humans cannot shut down one hemisphere and therefore need the type of sleep where we are not conscious of our surroundings.

My hours the past few weeks up until the last two weeks have been something like 2PM to 6AM.

My sleep pattern got really messed up from that schedule (working on a website project...I seem to code for longer spans of time at night), so now I seem to have eased back into a 9AM to 12/1AM pattern again

For years I worked outside sales and would be up until 12 or 1 am. I'd get up around 7 or 7:15am. Now I'm working an inside job and I hate to fight the 8 o'clock traffic. I get up at 6:15 and get to work about 7:30. Bedtime now is somewhere between 11 and 11:30pm.

I get up at 6:00 generally... I am usually in bed at 12:00 AM, but am not asleep until at least 1. I know I need more sleep, but I function normally like this, I am not reliant on caffeine, and I recuperate on Sunday, the only day I don't have school or I am not working at the audio shop.

During the summer (no school), I'll wake up at like 12:30pm and go to sleep at like 3:30am, lol. But when school starts soon, I'll wake up at like 5:30am and go to sleep at like 9:30pm.

Ok, so maybe my previous ~4am-12pm sleeping habits really were unusual.

I sleep from 12:30am to Midnight. It's a pretty hectic 30 minutes since I have to get up, shower, eat, see my kids, work, etc.

it is cool how with some folks, especially a few of our older friends and fam that you can set a watch to their sleep schedules eh stuey... for me im very erratic based on whats going on. generally i sleep for a couple of hours in the early evening 9-11 pm, then for a couple of hours in the early morning 6-8 am. on weekends i party and sleep til im rested

i thought about trying a polyphasic sleep schedule but its a little too out of the norm to even relate with most people

I wouldn't say that. During my senior year of undergrad, 2:00/2:30AM - 9:00/9:30AM for me was pretty common. I'm not trying to do that anymore now in grad school, but it is hard to get out of that cycle once you've been doing it for a while.

I had an ok schedule in my undergrad years - 3am was the absolute latest I'd be up except on the weekends and some Thursdays.

In the past 2 grad years though, that's when my schedule's been insane. Last year I'd often go to bed to the morning cartoons. The only reason I'm on a "normal" schedule now is because I offer to drive my new wife to the train station. Then I get back home and just do productive stuff before heading the half mile or so into my office on campus.

My qualifiers are in about four months - now THAT will require creative sleep management.

Weekdays:

7:30 AM - 10:00 PM (roughly)

Weekends:

variable - variable (within 12 hours)

Usually I skip sleep on Saturday night, sleep all day Sunday and then hopefully my patterns are back to normal.
