Timed Fuse Circuit Breaker - for any electricians...

I couldn't find an alternative category to post this thread so I just assumed this one was best.

For those of you on this site who may be trained electricians or at least have a knowledge of electrics within a household, please help me with this!

I've had a search on Google but to be fair I have no idea what exactly I'm looking for.

I was wondering whether it is possible to fit a breaker on my home fuse box that has a timer on it. To expand on this, basically is it possible for me to purchase a timer that will completely cut the power in my home at, for example, midnight and then have it automatically come back on at say 8 a.m.?

If this is possible could you post on here with any ideas and the sort of money I'm looking at?

Thanks,

I'm not familiar with such a thing and didn't find anything Googling it, either. It may not be "legal" in the sense of being within code as the smoke alarms (if present) wouldn't work, for example.

Just curious, why do you want to do this?

Hey, what about those little timers people use to turn their lights on automaticlly at night? It wouldnt be for the whole house, of course, but you could buy a few of them and use them to turn on some lamps or something.

In response to TwoRails:

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I mean to for example fit a breaker on a fuse that will turn the relevant fuse off (in my case all plug sockets in the home, not sure whether I have a separate fuse for upstairs and downstairs sockets) at a certain time and then come back on at a certain time.

Oh, and my smoke alarm's battery powered anyway.

I'm posting this on behalf of my parents. My dad is going to enquire more at a good electrical shop tomorrow. It's more for energy saving than anything, to control it after a specific time, because my brother stays up pretty late sometimes and it's costing him a fair bit every month.

Thanks so far.

pretty sure you could just turn everything off.....and then tell your brother to not leave anything on that isn't necessary.

seems like it would be the easiest and cheapest solution

Trust me; tried .

It might not come to pass anyway. But anymore suggestions are welcome.

Do a Google for "timer switches" or "timer circuit breakers", there may be something listed that could be used.

I went thru a bunch of pages under "timer circuit breakers" (and other variations) and didn't have any joy... I could have missed one, though. Some places had such a thing in the Google description but wanted registration.

any contactor controlled by a timer would work fine, but to make it legal it would need to be installed by a licensed electrician,
these things are use all the time in a industrial environment.

pink_tractorbeam, I get the impression this house is at least 45 years old and still has an actual "fuse box" and Not a circuit breaker panel. Is this correct?

As far as I know, we don't have a breaker for each individual room; from the last time I looked we have a fuse for upstairs lights; downstairs lights; plug sockets.

And the point of getting the timer switch is because my parents are going away and as a result he's going to be up til ridiculous times in the morning etc. To be fair it doesn't bother me what time he stays up til; but I'll probably suffer as a result of him doing it...

I'm pretty sure the house was built about 30 years ago; and yes it does have an actual fuse box.

[UPDATE]

I've just spoken to my parents; and my dad phoned up an electrician today who told him that, at least on our home, a time switch/breaker can't be installed.

I'd just like to thank you all for your time and effort into helping me out until my dad could confirm it with someone qualified. I appreciate it very much!

Thanks again,

Mark.
